I am a huge fan of "Downton Abbey" and I have spoilers in this post, so if you are not yet caught up, go watch it now and come back. And if you haven't yet seen it. Ugh. Get on Netflix right now and get caught up. You can thank me later.
I missed the first two seasons and had to catch up on DVD once I realized my error. I'm not sure what took me so long. This show is right up my alley:
Historical drama - check.
Beautiful house - check.
English countryside - check.
Soap opera plot - check.
It has everything I love in a TV show. I enjoy a good TV show or movie or book, because I love to escape reality. It's not like my reality is so bad, but who wouldn't want to imagine living in a gorgeous mansion in the English countryside surrounded by a devoted and loyal staff who anticipate my every need? Duh.
When I watch shows like "Downton" I like to imagine that I'm just like one of the characters in the story. Usually, it's the heroine (because really, who wants to be Daisy?). For several episodes I've gone back and forth trying to figure out which character I'm most like. I'm, of course, one of the Crawley sisters. I can't be a maid. I like Anna just fine, but I'm not going to escape my reality for her life. Nope. I'm a Crawley, for sure, but which one?
There's Mary. She's the oldest. I'm the oldest. Her parents adore her. My parents think I'm swell. She's got men courting her all the time. I get courted a lot too. At seven months pregnant I got hit on by a couple of high school boys and invited to a party if I brought beer. (Best. Day. Ever.) She's a bit bossy. I'm a bit bossy. She's flawlessly gorgeous. I'm decent looking. She's kind of a bitch. I'm kind of . . . Wait. I don't want to be Mary.
There's Sybil. She's a free spirit. I'm a free spirit. She's not afraid of hard work and she becomes a nurse during the war. I'm not afraid of hard work, but I am afraid of blood so I couldn't be a nurse. She gets romanced by the hot foreign chauffeur and whisked away from her family to start a new life. The Hubs is not a hot foreign chauffeur, but he likes to drive me places and he is an immigrant, so that's pretty close. Sybil's going to be a mother. I'm a mother. Sybil . . . is dead?? Sybil died!!! They killed Sybil. I can't even believe it. Great. Now I can't be Sybil.
So, who's left? Oh yeah, what's-her-name.
Edith. The middle daughter. The angry one who likes to stir up trouble. I'm angry and I like to stir up trouble. Edith worries about being a spinster. If the Hubs ever left me I'd totally be a spinster. There is no one else in the world who could love me. I'm sure of it - even old codgers with bum arms. Edith can't have breakfast in bed. I never get breakfast in bed. After she gets jilted at the altar (thank goodness we don't have that in common) Edith drags herself out of bed and writes an op-ed to the newspaper about women's voting rights. I write about women's rights. Damn. I'm Edith. I'm the frumpy, cross, homely writer one who can't eat breakfast in bed.
On second though, maybe I'll just be Mrs. Bird.
Which "Downton" character are you?

Because no one would ever confuse you with a prostitute?
I am totally Miss O'Brien. You don't want to fuck with me, because I WILL GET YOU BACK.
I love how Mary can be honestly brutal," no Edith we won't ever get along but we can hug because we're standing at our sisters death bed and I feel we should!" I know I'm not that old, but when I'm a grandma I want to be the dowager countess.... she can do what she likes, and mutter nasty things under her breath and totally get away with it... love it!
I felt such a connection to Sybil. She had a sense of duty and was ahead of her time. Darn it, why'd they have to kill her?? Sadly, I think I'm Mrs. Hughes. I just run my house and clean up after every body and fix problems.
I have always kind of felt like I identify most with Cora. The American who is just still a bit non-traditional and rough around the edges. I love the scene where Lord Grantham tells her they are running out of money and she says "I am an american. Have gun will travel". I think it is going to take YEARS for her to forgive him for not listening to the doctor and letting Sybil die. Sybil was her baby and the daughter most like her. Plus you gotta love when she helped Mary move that dead body in Season 1. That is a mama I can relate with. Only your mother helps you move a dead body and doesn't even tell your father!
I identify with their mother, Cora! I think she can hold a nice grudge (for the death of Sybil) and is willing to move a body for her daughter. She seems to be the sanest one of the bunch.
This is so painful. I have watched the entire 3rd season. I know how it ends.....Argh...still have to say, although I don't want to be 115 years old I like Violet. She gets some of the best lines.
I highly recommend that anyone who loves 'Downton Abbey' watch 'The Forsyte Saga', also on Netflix. It's delicious!! Historical, beautiful, suspenseful, romantic -- Loved it!
I think I'm Gwen, the housemaid from the 1st season. I've never liked being anyone's maid (my brothers, father, husband, son). I want to be out in the world working! When I'm old I totally want to be the dowager Countess.
Ditto! Lets not forget that she had a crazy mother too!
The Hubs is not a hot foreign chauffeur, but he likes to drive me places and he is an immigrant, so that's pretty close. BEST BLOG POST LINE EVER.
Me too! WTF?? I regret it a little because I can't talk about it with my friends since they are still on Sybil dying.
As for characters, I am totally Dowager Countess except for the being wealthy part.
I'm Mary. I'll own my bitchy-ness and ended up falling in love with someone I never imagined myself falling in love with. There's one exception, I don't really care what society thinks...or at least i like to think I don't care.
Some days, I'm Ethel...not because I'm a prostitute, but because every time Ethel is on the screen, I find myself saying "Oh, Ethel, you're gonna regret that!" and there are so very, very many days when I rue every single freaking decision I make.
"Only your mother helps you move a dead body and doesn't even tell your father!"
Maybe the best thing I've read all day. Or ever.
I wish I would have heeded your warning in the first sentence, since I've only seen Season 1. Sybil dies?! Motherfuck!
I don't know why everyone gives Edith such a hard time her family acts like she's some stupid, ugly duckling with no hope for any kind of life or success. I didn't like her at first but she really stepped up during the war and has been headstrong and interesting ever since. She's the only one who drives! Here's a quiz so you can know for sure-- http://www.weta.org/tv/picks/downtonabbey/quiz
Well, I like Mary's outfits the best, so I would pick her for the fashion, but I would go with Violet for her wit.
I LOVED this show up until the end of Season 3. I'm not sure if I'll start Season 4. I was SOOO bummed. I don't understand how they can keep killing off so many main characters. Sniff sniff.
I REALLY need to be watching this. I haven't seen it yet, but I totally want to. My people won't watch it with me. And I don't get tons of free t.v. time. Grr.
I'm going to have to watch it on Netflix. Currently im watching Drop Dead Diva.
I also voted for you. I love your blog and your book b
Im daisy. The people i'm in love with don't like me and i don't like the people that are in love with me. lolol
Hubs and I already discussed this the other day. I am mother-ish but firm like the head of the downstairs people and Hubs likes the head butler guy. (cannot think of their names now) but they may get together some day.
Anyway, we agreed that we are the top level of the low level people. Yep that is us, the top of the bottom.
I would definitely be Violet. She is by far the biggest smart ass and most sarcastic of the group and says exactly what she thinks. I love her!
Mrs Hughes and Carson! I agree there is some quiet sexual tension there that will have to be addressed at some point. I thought it might come out during her cancer scare story line but I guess not.
I like to think I'm the Dowager Countess of Grantham with my sarcasm and biting wit, but I'm probably more like Isobel Crawley. Annoyingly liberal, helpful and optimistic, but I get my subtle and clever jabs in there when necessary.
I'd like to think I'm like Violet. In fact, I'm fairly certain of it. I'm generally good with a quick and scathing comeback.
Carson is much too proper. I will be shocked if they allow a story line actually dealing with the obvious sexual chemistry between those two. After my initial shock, I would squeal with glee, because it would be awesome.
he left the show, they had to write him out somehow...came to america to pursue a career here
Edith is my favorite character. In series 4 (spoiler), they finally let the actress true beauty shine through. Her clothes and headpieces are to die for. I didn't like her at all in series 1, and now I just love her. I think I relate to her, because she is seen as in Mary's shadow, even though Mary really isn't all that great.
Well when I reach that age, I'd love to be Violet! because she is the best. Just magnificent!! And I do love Anna - she's such a good heart and sweet person, but I definitely don't want to be her now because....... oh wait. you guys aren't on Season 4 yet right?
never mind.
Cousin Rose is fun. in a "trouble starts out as fun" kind of way. just wait.
Yeah, they've said that when a family member-actor wants to leave, they have to kill them because it's not believable that Matthew would leave his wife and newborn child and...what? Live in London? Just sort of never be around? The servant-actors can just go "find another job" but the family member-actors just have to go, sadly. Let's hope the rest are happy sticking around for the remaining seasons!
Still just waiting for Mary and Edith to all-out brawl sometime in a true glorious celebration of all their sisterly differences. To more Downton perfection!
Ha! So right, no one wants to be Daisy, such a sheltered goody two shoes - how can anyone work so ceaselessly and believe that there's no life past the kitchen door?
Speaking of Daisy, she was great in the show Galavant.
