Week 7 of My Transformation - The Dirty 30

Yesterday was the start of week 7 of my transformation. Believe it or not, I woke up yesterday morning and thought, "What do I have to do today?" When I remembered it was a day to work out with Kris I actually thought, "Good."

Yup. "Good." Can you imagine me thinking that 7 weeks ago?? Not "Ugh" like I usually do or "Sigh. OK. Let's get it over with." I was pretty happy with myself for being so positive.

I arrived at Starting Line Fitness in a good mood and ready to work. All I can say is it's a good thing I was in a good mood, because Kris had an (evil) twinkle in her eye when she said, "Today we're going to do the Dirty 30."

The Dirty 30 is ten exercises for 30 reps each. Sounds OK, right? Except I've never done so many reps of so many different exercises. And just to make it more interesting Kris increased my weight in a lot of them.

About half way through my workout I gasped to Kris, "Son of bitch! I can't imagine how much this would suck right now if I was in a terrible mood today. You are kicking my ass!"

She just smiled sweetly and said, "That's ten. Just twenty more."

I managed to finish it all (after much cursing and stopping to catch my breath) except the crunches. The crunches are always at the end and yesterday I was praying for crunches just so I could have the chance to lay down. We finally got to crunches and I practically wept with joy when she brought out the mat for me to crawl onto.

I laid on my back and tried the first one only to squeal in pain. You see, I am a complete idiot and my body is an absolute wreck. Last week I diagnosed myself with a tumor when it was really a tight IT band (which is doing much better now after the roller of death, thanks for asking) and this week I managed to pull a muscle in my stomach - IN MY SLEEP!

No joke. I was sound asleep two nights ago and I rolled over and felt something pull in my stomach. It actually woke me up. Are you kidding me? A pulled muscle from sleeping?!! Only I could do this.

"I can't do it, Kris," I whined. "I pulled a muscle earlier this week."

"Oh yeah?"  She asked. "What have you been doing?"  I know she had visions of me doing 100 crunches every night or running several miles. "Is it your leg again?"

"No. It's in my abs."

"How did you do it?"

"I turned over too quickly in my sleep," I said. "Hey! It really hurts!" I complained over her guffaws.

Lucky for me she took pity on me and just made me hold a plank instead of doing my crunches and crying.

I am down for a total of over 7.5 inches and I'm definitely getting stronger so I would say Kris is doing it right.

Seven inches. That's awesome. Inches might not show up on the scale as quickly -- but they do in the jeans. Hurrah.

Congrats to you!!! Keep it up. Sigh. I wish I could have a personal trainer to kick my ass into shape.

I am so glad you are posting about this. I'm just starting my journey of weight-loss. Now I can look back on your posts and not only see your pain/frustration, but your success after pushing thru! Best of luck as you continue!

Good for you! I started a program in my livingroom a few weeks ago. I didn't bother measure myself or step on the scale but these days I have to keep hitching my pants up before they fall to the ground. And while that makes me smile, I'm sure if they DID happen to fall to the ground a few people would complain.

I would say YOU are doing it right!! Congratulations! And 7.5 inches is wonderful!

I just started exercising again after a long hiatus. I started doing Brazilian Butt Lift. Holy. Shit. My quads hurt so bad I'm considering a catheter or Depends, because frankly, sitting down to use the toilet is just too hard.

Awesome job, Jen! I love doing workouts like The Dirty 30 b/c they are such a challenge and I'm very stubborn. Plus it's a nice change from the same old routine.

The other great thing is that when you do it again in the future, you are going to OWN the Dirty 30.

Great job and congrats on the attitude shift. That is 2/3rd's of the battle! :)

Just remember - the dirty 30 = killin' it in a pair of jeans. Awesome!

I did the Crossfit version of the Dirty 30 the other day. (Looks like many of the same exercises but ends with jump rope - actually a welcome relief after the others. Plus you do it "for time" so you're supposed to be going as fast as possible. I finished in 20:01, of which 6 minutes was just the 30 burpees. Ugh.) It was AWFUL but boy do you feel so good about yourself when you finish.

Dude. Mad props. I don't know that I will ever get to the point where I wake up happy to work out. Particularly that craziness Kris put you through!

I can relate to your sleep injury. I pulled a muscle in my back in my sleep a few weeks ago. I had REALLY injured my back in the summer and my insurance wanted me to shell out 350 bucks for physical therapy...nothing like a little motivation...I started walking 3.5 miles a day while pushing my son in his stroller while keeping track of what I ate on the lose it app on my phone...at the time I was a size 10 teetering toward a size 12. I now wear a 6. That was 3 months ago and my in-laws haven't seen me since I started to lose weight. Since I didn't blab my poor physical health to people no one knows I lost a lot of inches (but not as much weight as you'd think). We have a family function this weekend and I can say victory will be mine when my mother in law sees me as she would openly make comments about my weight gain. (Clearly, she is someone IWTPITT).

Great job! I think you're giving a lot of us hope and a reason to get up off our....butts!

I have pulled many a muscle during sleep. Don't feel alone. It hurts worse than pregnancy induced leg cramps at 2 a.m. ! And congrats on the 7+ inches. You're making me feel like a lazy fat as$ as I sit on the couch in fuzzy pants and sweatshirt after supper of fat-laden Mexican food! Keep the awesomeness coming!

I pulled a boob in my sleep once. No really, I did! I was 3 weeks post implant and reached across to turn off my alarm clock and pulled something in my newly awesome boob! I broke it! After 4 months of pain it decided to try to exit the building! Ended up with a hole in my tata, had to have it removed and was lopsided for 9 months while it healed. Sleep injuries are no joke!!

Finally going to start exercising again and I'm starting with a personal trainer on Thursday. Eeek! Jen, does your personal trainer have you do any take home exercises?

I've been at work all day and just needed a little pick-me-up from the office blues... so I started reading some back entries of your blog and when I got to the IN MY SLEEP! part I busted out laughing so hard, thank God no one was around to hear. This is exactly what I needed after a stressful Friday!
