Top 3 Reasons Why I Can't Go to the Gym

This is week three of my transformation.  Catch up here and here.

Yesterday was my day to go to Starting-Line Fitness and see my trainer, Kris.

I did not want to go.

My appointment was for 10 am and at by 8 am I had a list of reasons why I needed to cancel:

1.  I'm too busy.  (You should see my DVR - I need to do some serious catching up on The Daily Show and Stephen Colbert!)

2.  I'm too tired.  (It would probably help if I didn't stay up late last night reading my new Cassandra Clare book.)

3.  I have nothing to wear.  (Seriously.  My one good semi-supportive bra is in the laundry pile.)

I remembered a conversation I'd had the day before with a friend.  The subject of my "transformation" came up and I told her, "A personal trainer is the only way I could do this."

I explained to her that I need to know that Kris is at the gym waiting on my fat ass to get there.  I told her that even though Kris is never perky, she's not a drill sergeant either.  She disciplines me the way I discipline my kids.  When I get whiny and tell her, "I don't wanna do those stupid ropes again" she just smiles at me and says, "Uh huh.  OK.  Let's go."  She corrects me when I'm working out so that I'm getting the maximum benefit - a video has never done that for me.  She laughs at me when I show her how terrible my balance is.  (Am the only one who can't balance on one foot??)

My favorite part is when she's going to have me do something I think is impossible I say, "You'd better tell me a good story while I do this, because I need to take my mind off this shit."  And then she does.  (Yesterday I heard all about her ideas for Halloween costumes for herself and her other trainer.  They like to do matchy-match costumes.  I think they should totally read my post about sexy Halloween costumes. I think I saw a comment about a sexy Bert and Ernie.  This would be perfect for those two!)

If this little pep talk in my head didn't motivate to me pull my stinky sports bra from the hamper and Febreeze it real quick, then taking my measurements did.  I measured myself last week and again this week.  The results were stunning.

In one week I've lost a total of 5.5 INCHES.

Not too shabby.  THAT motivated me to put a smile on my face and get my ass to the gym.

Congrats!
I know you're going to roll your eyes when you read this, but Victoria's Secret has decent sports bras (their VSX line). I am a 34DD and have had decent luck keeping things in line. Just in case you run out of Febreeze. :)

I worked with a trainer for most of the last year, and it really helped, to the point that I'm actually going to exercise without going to see the trainer now! Much cheaper, and I'm proud of myself for staying committed despite hating every moment of it. :) Just recently found your blog via my friend JD at Honest Mom. You might want to check out my open letter to the perfect woman at Zumba: http://www.busysincebirth.com/2012/07/open-letter-to-perfect-woman-at-zumba.html. Looking forward to reading more on your transformation!

I was up till 1am reading "City of Glass" last night...need to get to the Gym tonight. It would help if I could read on the treadmill; I am just not that coordinated.

Nice job! I agree that it does help to have someone there to motivate you. I have found a great group of women (& some men) at my strength & conditioning classes that get me going. It's not an easy road but you'll be glad you went down it. Keep up the great work.

Wow! I am full of excuses not to work out. I don't have time (naptime is precious...and for cleaning), I don't have anyone to watch the girls, I can't afford a gym right now, I don't run...and on and on. But those results definitely don't lie!

Go Girl! You are kicking ass and taking names...maybe whining and simpering a little in between...but hey! You are KICKING ASS and TAKING NAMES all the same!!! So proud of you!

5.5 inches... Holy moly! Now, quit thinking up excuses (reasons) and go meet with your trainer for every scheduled workout. You're doing great! Oh, and thanks to you & Title 9, I found out yesterday I've been wearing a way too small bra... actually should be wearing a 40E! Wha

Amazon has an app you can download to your smart phone... you go online with your phone and download audio books to the phone and then you can play them back as you run, or whatever. Its a great way to stay up on your reading. Not the same as getting to actually read though...

5.5"??? Keep it up, and you'll be the one in sexy Bert & Ernie costume...

I had a personal trainer before I was going to try to get pg for the 1st time, and if it wasn't for him, there's no WAY I would have dragged my ass there. No. Way.

That is awesome!!! Congratulations!! This morning I met my sis-in-law at 515am to jog with her. I've never gotten up that early to exercise, but I'm so glad I did it!! Yay and keep going!!!

How wonderful about losing those inches. I meet with my trainer once a week. I love her. I love that my body is toned. But when it gets to be 10:30 and I know I have to start getting ready -- I don't like it either. Yesterday, she was concentrating on lunging and jumping. I hated it. But I keep coming back because I love her and really do think it is going to keep my body looking pretty darn good for someone heading into her sixth decade. So glad that you are seeing such great results.

Teaching fitness/personal training was my job for fifteen years, so if you ever need any extra "cyberspace, blogger-to-blogger, mother-to-mother, free advice", I'm your girl. I don't generally blog about fitness - I blog mostly about my neurotic teenagers - but sometimes I miss my job. (Yesterday, I was missing my job - thefurfiles.wordpress.com/2012/10/17/how-you-like-me-now/.)

And I know it's tough, but keep going. It'll be so worth it. Just think, when you're ninety, you'll look seventy, and who wouldn't want that? ;)

This sounds a whole lot like the comment I left on your very first "I'm getting fit" post! I run the gauntlet of excuses every Tuesday and Thursday as to why I need to cancel, but then I go, and I am always so happy I did, I feel great! One. Day. At. A. Time. That's all we can do. :)
I wish I would lose inches, I eat enough to make up for my hard working out, which is asinine, but true. Devan

OMG Jen, I'm totally going through the same thing too! I've been going to the trainer only one day a week (he's expensive) for about a month and a half and I'm seeing results, albeit slow. I'm also trying to walk for at least a half hour 2-3 days a week too. Although lately that hasn't been happening! I haven't lost that much weight, but I've lost inches. I think that means I'm creating muscle which is heavier than fat. That's what I'm telling myself anyways! I am short, so a few extra pounds really shows on me. Its been so hard some days to go, but I have my friend who meets me there and I don't want to let her down! Keep up the hard work and the new clothes you will have to buy because all your old ones are too big will motivate you!

Right there sweating (and swearing)with you,
Mary

Well this has nothing to do with working out and everything to do with Cassandra Clare, is there a "new" book I'm missing out on?!? Don't hold out on me Jen, lol!

ps...My transformation starts Monday at the gym, I've gotten down 15lbs with dieting alone, time to add in the gym right? And seriously, who starts the gym or diet on any day other than Monday ;) So Monday it is! Thanks for the encouragement with your transformation post, awesome job!

Sherri, it's "new" to me, because I finally came up in the queue at the library. It's the 5th one that everyone has already read. :)

I have been thinking about doing that, anything to get my mind off of the elliptical machine!

I know this is a few days late, but I just read in InStyle that you can put clothes in a bad in the freezer and it kills the perspiration germs which kills the smell. Just make sure to let the sports bra warm up first so noone gets an eye poked out!
