Open Letter to Bra Manufacturers

Dear Bra Manufacturers,

Hi there.  I'm Jen.  I am a 40 year old mother of two.

Actually, allow me to introduce myself in a language you can understand: I'm a 38 DDD.

I have always had a ridiculous time bra shopping for these small boulders I carry around and I'm always cursing your names.  You've probably heard me yelling "Damn you, Maidenform, and your barbed underwire!" or "I hate you, Vicki!  Your secret is to just push everything to the top and hope it stays put!" from various dressing rooms around the country.

You bra manufacturers have been doing a bit better over the years with making more comfortable and better supporting bras for every day use, but would it kill you to make them pretty too?  Girls with jugs like to have a bra that is a work horse and attractive - think how beautiful those Budweiser Clydesdales are.  They can haul a lot, but they look good doing it.  And don't even get me started on the prices you charge!

As much as I'd like a gorgeous and affordable bra, I'm getting off topic.  That isn't why I'm writing today.  Today, I'm writing to you about sports bras.  WTF, you guys?  Have you even tried on your so-called sports bras you try to sell to the girls with the coconut sized boobies??  Did you ever invite a couple of chesty girls over to sample your wares before you sold them to the stores?  I don't think you did.  I think you guys took a regular sized sports bra and just sort of enlarged it and called it good.

I've recently started a new work out regimen.  I'm not running or anything crazy like that, but there is a fair amount of bobbing and hopping and such.  I decided I needed a sports bra to help contain the girls and make it more comfortable to work out without slapping myself upside the face with an errant breast.

The first one I tried was from the Just My Size brand.  I figured, this brand knows big girls and surely they understand our plight and they've made a bra that can withstand a work out and keep everything in its place.  Ha!

This bra was a joke.  It was the worst one I tried.  It was like wearing a t-shirt with a bit of elastic around the edges.  My boobs literally fell out of the bottom of this piece of crap.  What the hell?

Next I tried Danskin.  I should have known better.  This is a brand that caters to the boobless.  Their XL sports bra is like a strangling tube top that can barely cover the middle of my boobs.  Once I finally wriggled into the damn thing my boobs were squishing out the top, the bottom and the sides.  I think there was even a bit of boobage shoved around behind me!  I looked like two dachsunds fighting inside of a child's leotard.  I practically had to cut myself out of the damn thing.

This week I picked up a Jockey bra that was touted to have a "new and improved fit" - or some sort of "buy me now" jargon.  When I put it on, I was moderately impressed.  Everything fit where it was supposed to and there was very little cleavage seepage.  My only complaint is the support.  It's still a bit more jiggly than I'd prefer.  You're getting there, Jockey!  Keep trying.

What I'd like to propose is that we work together.  I will help you design the perfect sports bra for the lady who probably will never go for a run or do a jumping jack in her life, but would love to have the support to do so if she so chooses.

I can try out your prototypes and tell you what is good and what is bad.  For instance, I've seen a lot of sports bras that zip up the front.  I'm guessing that would be bad for the XL boobies.  I can't imagine the pain of catching a bit of excess flesh in a zipper.

What I'm thinking of is a cross between a giant Ace bandage that you can wrap tightly around the girls and secure with heavy duty Velcro and one of those Moby Wrap baby carriers.  Maybe it could be a product that does both?  You can use it to carry your baby OR strap down your melons and go for a jog.  Because it's multi functional I won't mind paying $65.00.

You guys let me know when you're ready.  In the meantime, I'm going to go find some duct tape and strap these babies down and get ready for my work out this morning.

Don't Miss my BOOKS!

I have the same issues with sports bras. What I do to help my cause is wear a regular bra and then a sports bra over that. It helps me. Ridiculous, I know, but it has kept my sanity while playing sports.

PS- I love your blog.

I hear you! I like one made by Moving Comfort (or in this case, NOT Moving Comfort). Locks 'em down. Not the cheapest, but that goes with the territory for D+ gals. I've also found that buying a band size smaller than you think you are helps a lot (I wore 36 or 38 for years before a Nordstrom bra fitter set me straight - 34!) I'd love to pop into Target and buy one of those $15 Champion jobbers. but it is not to be.

Well, I have the opposite issue that you do, but I've heard really good thing about Moving Comfort bras (http://www.movingcomfort.com/) for those who are better endowed than I. Good luck - I imagine this problem is a pain in more ways than one.

I have doubled up with a regular bra plus sports bra, or also two sports bras. Its pretty much the only option for those of us carrying around two pigs fighting under a blanket every day.

Try the catalog Title Nine. They have a large selection of sports bras for all sizes. They are not cheap, but I'm a D myself and they are the only ones that I've found to fit. Also, they do not go over your head. Seriously, who's idea was that? Good luck.

I am a 36J. Yeah... Sports bra.... LOL
When I was closer to your size, I went shopping online. There are a few sites that do sell good sports bras. Yes, they do mash them down and things go...out. BUT, the melons stay put. I have read that as you get to a certain size, you have to get "stronger" bras for less activity. The one I currently have, I could go horseback riding in and not jiggle an ounce. Look for sites that carry European bras. I guess they figure women come in many shapes.

Might be time to invest in a breast reduction sugery...

Go to a really nice bra specialty store that sells brands like Freya and Fantasie. Trust me, your life will be changed forever. You're probably not even actually a 38DDD - probably more like a 34G. Do yourself a huge favor and go somewhere better than a department store! It's worth every penny and they have gorgeous items in ALL sizes.

Allison said...

OMG! My problem EXACTLY! I'm a 36 DD and I started CrossFit recently...oh my. If they would just make a bra that actually held me in place, that would be great. You let me know if you find a good one. (Victoria's Secret used to make a line that I really liked for bigger girls- stay away from anything Target makes!)

Anonymous said...

You need to go to a good specialty running store and get properly fitted for a good sports bra. They are out there, but unfortunately they cost a lot of money.

Leslie said...

Try Moving Comfort!!! I found them on Amazon and they are AMAZING!!! The Fiona, Maia, and Juno work the best for me. I'm a 38dd and I tried them ALL! These are snug and keep you in place really well!!

Try the Intimacy store if there's one near you. Bras there aren't cheap, but are worth it. Sports bras of varying types and support strenghts! Best investment I've ever made. The girls are well-supported and where they belong (says this D/DD)

Same problem here - finally found a solution with Lululemon's Ta-ta Tamer bra. Pricy but worth every single bouncing penny. It does what it says!

Dawn said...

I like Champion bras. They breathe, keep the girls in place and don't cut off circulation. My advice is to go to a sporting goods store (Sports Authority or some such) and try a bunch of them on until you find one that works for you.

Jen-

Been there, honey. Try ENELL bras. I can tell you with great authority that these bras LAST as I have them for 6 plus years. Wash them with your clothes, in a lingerie bag, but air dry them. I am a 34G- the bras clasp in front-14-16 hooks. So sturdy. AND, I am a runner. www.enell.com

I like Old Navy's Women's Plus sports bra. IMO they are they best you're going to fine in an affordable option. I even wear them to bed sometimes if my back is bothering me. You still have a uniboob but it will stay put the -- from a 40 DD.

Becky said...

Try the Anita sports bra. It may be a little pricey but it works. I have tried them all to keep the girls contained.

Anonymous said...

I feel your pain. I am a 32G....yes that is an actual size. I recently purchased a Wacol sports bra (Style 855170). It is the first one I have ever owned that fits, is comfortable, and offers support. Because it is so rare to find 32 in a larger cup size, I have worn nothing but Wacoal since....well, puberty. They have a lot of pretty options. The downside is they are expensive and rarely go on sale. The Nordstrom people will keep your size on record and let you know if they get a wild color or something that is discontinued and on sale. A good bra will take inches off your waste, help your posture, it is a must. Now...can you please rant to the bathing suit people...another frustration for those of us with melons.

I also wear a 38 DDD bra, & I ride horses... bouncing... up & down... the answer to your problem is The Last Resort Bra, from Title Nine, here is the link:
http://www.titlenine.com/product/313801.do?sli=X-Small_Black_0&kwd=last+resort+bra

I do still wear a regular bra under it, but I swear, I've also tried 10 million other sports bra's, & this one is the BEST. My girls are strapped down, & they ain't moving!!

I too like the Champion line, and I'm a big tata'd gal. They held me in place jogging, doing step, kickboxing, jumping jacks, etc. And they are cheap. I think I got mine at Sears or Target. At my largest cup size I've been a double H, so I know of what I speak.

On a somewhat related note...I have wide feet. Not a little wide. I have platypus feet. Would it be too much to freaking ask that shoe manufacturers realize there is a HUGE segment of the population who, while having feet more suited to tree climbing or paddling, would like to wear stylish, comfortable shoes that won't give them corns? Why do all the true wide shoes look orthopedic? I'm not THAT old. I am short. I'd like a cute heel. Cute gym shoes. In wide. It's not that hard.

I think I can sympathize? I'm small, but I briefly felt the pain of the ladies with big cans when I was pregnant and it suddenly hurt to trot down the stairs. Your description of what you'd like to see made me think of the post-partum support garment (c-section girdle) I wore after I had my son.

Stephanie said...

PREACH. i'm in for testing these contraptions out, too. i run with three sports bras and there is still all kinds of movement going on, from a 40H.

Unknown said...

I've never even bothered with trying a sports bra. I can barely even find a decent "everyday" bra. I'm 5'1, 150 lbs, & all boob = 38 H. I've always wondered who these bra makers product test with.

Leila said...

Totally what I've been doing for almost 10 years. Even in high school, when I had just a B cup, I was doing that cause I hadn't found a truly secure sports bra. Now days, I'm a C, but wearing a regular bra with a sports bra on top is the only way I have found to secure the ladies in place with real support.

Honestly, I've just given up actually trying to find a good sports bra. They all feel like it's just stretchy fabric with an insanely constricting elastic at the bottom. I think they do that to fool you into thinking that it's "supporting" your girls. And you end up thinking that cause the lack of oxygen that is happening because the elastic is preventing your lungs from actually moving to get enough air in.

Tabitha said...

I was going to suggest the same thing. That is what I do. My boobs are on the smaller size (38 B/C) & I still have trouble with sports bras.

Anonymous said...

Okay.. I completely agree and after lots of searching, the Moving Comfort - Fiona sports bra is the only one that I have been able to find. I love it. (and I could actually get it in bright green!)

It's better to get into the fitness supply vendors to try to find a decent sports bra for the more well endowed. The Moving Comfort brand is very good. Champion also makes a few decent ones for larger chested women - just be sure to choose their highest possible level of support.

I love the Title9 last resort bra. It is the ONLY thing I have found for 40DD+ that can actually allow me to run comfortably. It's ugly and pricey but it's worth it. I'm older than most here and I remember gym class in my younger days (the 60's and 70's)when sports bras didn't exist. Gym class was an exercise in torture for me and eye candy for the boys. I'm supposed to run and NOT use my arms to keeps the girls from slapping me in the chin? Sheaaaah.

I envy the bra choices nowadays. At least I can keep them constrained in one way or another. What I really wish is to go braless once and awhile. Wouldn't that be heaven? Oh well, I am what I am.

Moving Comfort sports bras. Style #350003 - Fiona. I'm a 38DD, and I've run numerous half marathons and other races and I LOVE these bras. They are adjustable in the shoulders and I can cinch the girls up as tight as is comfortable for me. The regular bra manufacturers do a really crappy job at sports bras for chesty girls. Specialty is the way to go, and sadly it does come with a higher price, but VERY worth it.

Yes, I have actually gotten my husband to CUT one off of me because I was having a panic attack. It was wet with sweat, and no matter how much a wiggled and deformed myself I wasn't getting out of it. Needless to say, I've pretty much tried them all. And thanks to their non existance for "bigger chested girls" I wear two bras! Yep, you read that correctly, TWO bras if I'm needing to keep them under control for exercise purposes! I prefer to not come out with a black eye after a class of zumba!

Unknown said...

i'm guessing that's off the table, otherwise jen wouldn't be complaining about buying a bra. ??wtf??

I second what the first commenter said. Title Nine is the ONLY place for big-boobed women to find a sports bra. I have bigger boobs than you (lucky me, I know!) and I have found SEVERAL sports bras from Title Nine that make it possible for me to run around the block with not even a jiggle. Good luck! Also, try Bare Necessities online for regular everyday bras in large sizes.

I'm all about Title Nine. They've got every level of support from "sitting at home in your jammies" to "riding a galloping stallion". I'm pretty sure the one I use on the elliptical has the words "straight jacket" in the name but my 36ddd boobies are flattened so well I look like a 12 year old from the waist up.

Michelle said...

Someone beat me to Enell. I wear the Enell Light everyday and the regular Enell for working out. It is not the most attractive bra, especially the regular one, but the bounce really does stop there.

Both of my daughters (18 & 21) "clog" which requires a lot of bouncing around. They are both VERY well endowed, they are way on up in the alphabet beyond where most mall stores dare to go and if they do, they assume you must be a size 40 or greater, which they aren't. They wear either a regular bra and TWO sports bras or a bra, a sports bra and a tank top. Don't get me started on the tears that have been shed over the fact they have to wear an "ugly" bra and all their tiny bobbied friends are wearing the little neon, lace, animal print scraps that Junior stores call a bra. BTW, the most functional sports bra we have found is made by Champion.

I'm a 38DD and HATE sports bras. I own one, yes I work out a lot. HA Anyway, I decided I should wear it to Zumba the other night since on night one of Zumba the girls were bouncing out of control. My sports bra creates a uniboob effect that is so not attractive, nor is if comfortable. When you find a great one let me know!

Anonymous said...

I was just going to suggest that same thing. I am a new Mom with breastfeeding boobs and I teach Zumba. Had to go to Runner's World and pick up an ENELL. My other daughter calls it my "Astronaut Bra." They are expensive, for sure, but if you're working out, you have to have at least one!

Jenn Ross said...

Enell.com These people got started because of large melons and no sports bra that would fit or support. They are not cheap but everyone who has tried them LOVES them including my daughter who for some reason inherited a VERY recessive gene and has some rather large breasts. To get over the expense think of all the money you have already spent on the bras that don't do the job. They may even send you a sample in exchange for your review.
I have always wondered who sizes the sports bras. I am a B cup and need a large or extra large. They must be measuring these things on girls with NO boobs. Good luck..me and my girls( the ones on my chest) are rooting for you!

Thank you on pointing out how much the over-your-head option sucks! It's like the makers have a hidden camera built in just to laugh at my contortions as I try to put the damn thing on.

I'm a 34 DDDD or G whatever they are calling it these days. I do the same thing. Sports Bra over my regular bra. There isn't one on the market that will support my girls.

Check out the "Shock Absorber" brand at barenecessities.com. I am a 36G and this is the best sports bra I've ever used.

Not cheap, but they do the job.

christineleigh said...

I've heard that Title Nine has the best sports bras, but they cost a pretty penny. Since I don't have cash to burn, I usualy just wear two or three at a time depending on the brand.

Anonymous said...

I've got the opposite problem. Most sports bras will flatten my little girls (B) so that it looks like I'm flatter than a 5 year old. I'd like to look like I've got a little something going on in the chestal region.

Ki said...

The only cheap option for these 40Hs is a reg bra, a 'sports' bra & then a running top with built in compression. Yes, most days I feel like I've worked out just getting dressed for the gym. And don't get me started on the whole "pretty" bra issue. It doesn't exist, I'm lucky if I get more then a color option of black, white, & beige

Anonymous said...

You need a Moving Comfort bra. I buy mine at a local retail location of a major sporting goods company but you can buy direct online, too. They aren't cheap but they really work and last a long time. I have four and I run, kickbox, or do some weighted cardio every day so I wash them each at least once if not twice a week and they have lasted more than a year. There are a few different styles and I have some of each. They really hold tightly. Look for options that have adjustable cross-backs. That way, you can accommodate the girls with the right cup size and shorten the straps to address your heigh requirements. I don't work for Moving Comfort but I have tried a lot of really cruddy bras over the last 20 years as my girls have grown and then tried to make buddies with my kneecaps. - Stacie

I was fool enough to try one of those sports bras that zip in the front. I was a sophomore in HS and didn't know any better. It unzipped with the slightest movement. Thank goodness I went to an all girl school.

My best friend is 4'8" and a 32G. The ONLY place she can get bras is a speciality store. She pays an obscene amount but has functional pretty bras and a sports bra that lets her run. I went with her once (a 90 min drive). Wow. I have never had a more perfect fit. I see why she does it, even though the prices are scary. Once I am FINALLY done nursing, I'm there. Until my baby is done making my girls multifunctional it's not worth it.

Try "Endure" by Under Armour. Its legit support and comes in larger sizes. I think most big sporting stores sell them (I get mine at Dick's Sporting Goods). Going to run you about $50 but its well worth it.

Can I just say how much I love living in the UK now. I'm a 32F, an unheard of size in the states. Obviously being skinny and having jugs us unheard of, which socks the hell of me with the US being so onto augmentation. Shop from a European maker and you'll never curse tour bra again. Elle MacPherson is gorgeous as is Freya. I've gotten perfect sports bras from both and I play tennis with the girls perfectly secured. Sometimes a fastened style sports bra in a band size down will help from the clueless makers

I am in total agreement with all the ladies who have recommended Moving Comfort bras. I am a 38D and I love the Juno. It is by far teh best sports bra I've ever owned! This company is just what you are looing for! I started running last year, but I refused to start until I found a sports bra that would secure the ladies. I went to a specialty running/sporting good store and tried on a ton of bras. This bra is not cheap, but I did find it on Amazon for about 2/3 the price the store had it. I don't even bother with what Target, etc label as "high impact" sports bras. They are ridiculous for large chested women. A+++++ for Moving Comfort!

Another vote for Moving Comfort. I'm more of the coconut size, but when I was nursing my baby I got a taste of what you are talking about. Trying to run when you are literally carrying a couple of milk "jugs" is not surprisingly very uncomfortable in most bras. Moving comfort totally saved me and they were discounted on Amazon - even better!

I am a 44DD equestrian, so if you want to talk about bouncing around, I'm your girl!

Enell Sports Bras are A-MAY-ZING! Yes, it feels really tight at first, but I wear Under Armour as well, so it doesn't bother me. You do get a bit of a uniboob, but nothing's moving, and I'm at the barn, so who cares?

Of course my measurements are just so special that I was between sizes. I emailed the manufacturer's customer service - and never heard back.

However, I did find my two Enells on eBay. The measurements were off (so they must have been relegated to the seconds pile) but I found exactly what I needed - for just under 1/2 the regular price too!

Just checked - there are 175 Enells listed right now.

My girlfriend sells for EBW (The Bra Lady), and swears their sports bras are terrific. We haven't managed to connect yet, so I can't say.

And, in a pinch, VetWrap will hold the girls in place QUITE securely. One of the ladies on the drill team used to wrap herself before they performed. ;)

Though I have never been in your situation -- I echo the comments about Title Nine. Their catalog seems to have tons of bras with more support. They grade them with one barbell being the lightest on up to 4 barbells. It's too bad you can't go try some of these on before you buy. They are expensive. I baby mine with the whole laundering thing.

My kid can get a jock or compression shorts for hockey and spend less than $30 to, as he calls it, "protect the nuggets." Why are sports bras at least twice that?

I just skimmed though most comments and I love the "oh so simple solution" get a reduction! Thanks - I am a single mom with a 36 H size and to jump up and say - sure reduce me - try the fact that this is a serious surgery and takes WEEKS of recovery time!!! Yes, it is a great solution but not always a viable one - so honestly - why in the world can BRA COMPANIES not pull their heads out of their rear ends and MAKE LARGER cupped bras for woman who are are "larger" but not large around! Why does it not occur to them that BLACK, BEIGE or WHITE bras get old! If I knew I had more color choices - heck maybe even a "matching" bra and panty set - I would BUY them as would most women in our situation! Obviously - there are MANY women out there - looking for fun color bras - sports bras - matching sets - I see a HUGE market - TAP INTO IT!

It sucks. I feel deformed. Off balance. Thankfully, when #5 stops nursing, I will shrink, and become more like myself again. But until then, I sympathize with you.

I hear ya - I'm a 38J (and I RUN). 2 bras and a compression tank top and still I bounce. I can't believe they can't come up with something better!

I like the Ta Ta Tamer by Lululemon. I never realzed that a bra existed that could eliminate all bounce from my 36C's.

Thank you for addressing this horrible topic. I have pretty much given up hope of doing any exercise other than swimming and vacuuming because I also am a 38DDD and what a mother effing joke it is to find a sports bra that will keep your boobs from giving you a black eye and a bloody nose.

Kaliste said...

I feel your pain plus some. I'm a 36 J. Yup- lucky, lucky me. I've found figleaves.com and http://www.barenecessities.com/. For some reason American women aren't allowed to have large breast, but European women are! Look into Freya, Panache, Elomi and Shock Absorber brands. I have found sports bras, regular bras, even SWIMSUITS that actually fit me. I have sports bras by the brands I mentioned, and they don't mash my boobs into 1 giant uniboob AND they actually support me! I know that BareNecessities goes as small as a 28 band up to an N cup size. And a lot of the bras that fit me come in PRETTY colors! Like PURPLE AND RED AND FLOWERS!!!! Sad to get so excited over a bra. Good luck!

I'd be on board with testing too!

Currently I have a Nike one I found at Marshalls and it was love at first bounce - make that lack of bounce actually. On days I run, but don't teach in the pool after I wear this. On days I have to teach, I put my keeps everything where it belongs guard/teaching/training suit on and just rinse off between

I'm a distance runner who has the same problem. Try moving comfort. The one with the 5 barbells next to it on the page where they sell them. LOL. It works. Fifty bucks well spent.

I am a 36 DDDD. I love the Shock Absorber. It is fantastic! I don't do too much as far as impact goes but I do end up doing the occasional jumping jack or burpee set. This bra rocks! It also doesn't make me look like I have a giant balloon in the center of my chest but keeps the girls separate.

That was my size too before I had reduction surgery...my insurance company did pay for it, and it was the best decision I ever made for myself. Getting ready to run my first half marathon in less than 2 weeks, and I never could have done it before...

I don't have your 38 DDD problem, I'm a medium/small sized girl, but one of my friends that likes to run wears 2 sports bras to contain hers. Also, www.titlenine.com is a woman's store that is geared toward the athletic woman and they have what looks like to be a good line that is rated based on support and such. It might be worth a look. Hope you find something before you give yourself a black eye :)

34 D. Only Lefty now behaves a little better.

But....here's where you want to buy your sports bras: http://www.titlenine.com/category/sports-bras-and-undies.do?nType=2

I have one of each of these and I LOVE THEM! They were worth every penny of the $38 I spent on each of them. They keep "the girls" contained and in place and I don't feel like I'm going to bounce out of them. They don't size by cup/band size but the size chart is accurate. (My mom is also a 38DDD and she wears the size 18.) I'm larger so I just sized accordingly. Also, if you order them and they don't fit or you don't like them, you can send them back or return them to a Lane Bryant store. I've been really happy with mine though. I've had them about six months.

Here's the thing about sports bras...by the time you have bent and twisted and stretched and contorted, you don't need to exercise anymore. I get more of a workout putting those things on than I do walking my two miles at the mall!

I don't like regular bras either. I have no shoulders. I come from a long line of women who are constantly pulling up their bra straps as they fall down. I am a large chested woman and they don't make any that are racer backed for my size. Not anywhere. So if you have ever seen a woman herding 4 kids while pulling up her bra straps every 3 seconds, then we have met.

Elomi Energise Underwire Sports Bra EL8040
I wear a 44G or a 42H bra, this bra keeps my huge girls under control and I played cheap and worked my first one 3-5 times a week washing after every use for over 6 months before I bought another and it's stood up amazing well going into 1.5 years now.
Enell also gets great reviews.

I wouldn't waste money on another brand! I have spent hundreds on bras and most couldn't keep my girls in place.

my suggestion - L or XL underamour sports bra

http://www.underarmour.com/shop/us/en/womens-endure-d-cup/pid1001175-001

slight squish factor, but better then any other i’ve tried and if it is great for running on me (i’m a 38-40 DD depending on how bad i’m pigging out at the time), it is great for all! and it doesn’t add to boob/cleavage sweat and it is comfy,.

What I would like is one that I can put on without feeling stupid. Nothing like squeezing one of those things over my head with my arms sticking out and waving around as I try to wiggle one of those things over my huge knockers. I'm all about the Title 9 BOUNCELESS Bras. They are awesome and and the ladies don't go flapping in the wind. Especially when you do jumping jacks. I'm a 38 Double D to the 3rd power or so and would LOVE to get a reduction. My shoulders are getting "saddlebacks" (like horses get) because my bra straps are so darn thick and they pull down so much. The Bounceless does cause for the "Uni-boob" as someone mentioned above and they do push the boobs in to your lung cavity but its all worth it!

A breast reduction (11 years ago, at 22) was the best decision I ever made!!! I know it can be pricey, and I know insurance is cracking down (the nurse asked if I had back pain, I said yes, and the procedure was nearly covered) BUT if you have documentation from orthopedic doctors and the like, there's a possibility some of could still be covered. You just have to find the right combo of plastic surgeon/ortho to make it work. I'm still happy with the results and I'm now into my 30's and have had twins. It's definitely worth researching anyway. Just to not always have the pain and discomfort is totally worth it.

Holy mother lode of comments! Yes, 2 bras is the only way I can possibly do anything with a bounce - aargghh. Love the suggestions though -title nine has faired well here. I had a terrible bra shopping experience: store 1 (smaller, but upscale specialty shop)- "Maybe you should consider breast reduction" Store 2 (a million bras in one place)- "I'm sorry, we just don't have anything here for you"
Wow - that day SUCKED :(
Vanity Fair outlet did have "exquisite form" bras that fit and are a great low price. Then I layer another crazy "bestform" spandex sports style bra. Size 40?? but it works. Good luck. Please give a final report of your findings - looks like lots of us could use some tips. Thanks- LOVE your blog & congrats on your book!

Two websites for you:
Big Girls Bras, (biggerbras.com) and Title Nine (titlenine.com)
I wear a 36D, definitely big enough when it comes to exercise, bathing suits, etc. I am no longer 21 years old, so the girls have a bit more elasticity, shall we say, after two pregnancies and 48 years :) I find my bathing suits at Big Girls Bras or Athleta, which offer bra sized suits, especially for those of us with bigger chests. I find athletic bras (I exercise 4-5 days a week) at Title Nine. They specialize in helping women with all sorts of different size breasts, especially the big ones, stay motionless while exercising. Their descriptions feature how many "barbells strong they are". The more barbells, the less you'll move. The stronger bras may not be pretty, but they work! Hope this helps!

I agree totally! I've had some decent luck with Lane Bryant. Actually, I think almost every bra I own is from there. And they're pretty, too! I always buy during a BOGO sale. The 2 sports bras I have have underwire (which I'm a fan of, because who wants a uniboob?), and can either be cross back or regular.

Hey Mon! said...

Obviously this post struck a nerve. Or there are a lot of spammers trying to convince us big-chested girls to try their expensive sports bras.

I would recommend trying the high-end boutique bra shops like some others recommend. Buy one to repay them for the fit and then go online to buy some more at cheaper prices. I've done that in the past and plan to again when my weight stabilizes a bit.

I haven't done that for a sports bra, but that is brilliant! I always "double bagged" as a previous poster said when I was VERY large breasted (after each baby while nursing I was a 36DDD at the least)

I feel very lucky to be somewhere in the 36D to 38D range, depending on the bra. I did find a sports bra that allows me to run at Wal-Mart! But there's no way this baby would have worked when I was a DDD.

Good luck!

Sharon said...

I second the Title Nine recommendation. I have one of the stronger support sports bras from them (named something like A/C underwire?) and it is the only one I've ever worn that fits AND doesn't created the "uniboob."

Erika said...

I'm going to have to go thirds on the Title Nine recommendation. My sister, who got GINORMOUS while breastfeeding, used their bounceless bra and found that it lived up to its name. You've gotta love a company that rates it's bras on a "bounce" scale with 1-5 frogs based on how much bouncing you can do before you risk putting an eye out!

Anonymous said...

I'm the same size as you and I use the Trade up Sports Bra. You can find it at Title 9. It's expensive $79 - but toally worth it. It's comfortable and keeps the girls in place!

I'm your exact bra size. In the Army, my Drill Sgt had to drive me to an offpost store to get a sports bra that could handle me while running. Needless to say, before the Army, I never ran! However, one of the female drill sgts pulled me to the side and told me that the sports bra I had was "offending" the male drill sgts, so they took me to get one that would not offend. Back then, all I could find was 2 high impact sports bras, and they barely did the job. Luckily, I finally found the Moving Comfort Fiona sports bra at Fleet Feet Sports (Dick's also sells them!). Look it up, they're the best!!

Heather said...

I'm a 36DDD and I spent a LONG time researching sports bras because I'm a gym junkie and I was tired watching the girls fling around in the mirror during class. I have finally found one I really love that does NOT give you the giant "uni-boob" look. Its the panache sports bra. I'm not being paid to advertise for them so I won't wax on, but they are worth the $60 honestly. I particularly like the fact that you can change it to a racerback since that gives more support.

I had a reduction 4 years ago and consider it the best thing I ever did for "ME". I thought my husband might be disappointed with the outcome, but actually it has been the opposite. Between my increased self-esteem,and ability to wear sexier lingerie, etc, he is actually MORE happy! To the responder who says you may lose nipple sensation...well, mine INCREASED! There was very little pain involved and now, 4 years out the scars are virtually invisible. I did have to go to an Orthopedic for a recommendation, and the Plastic Surgeon required a Mammogram before the procedure, all of which was covered by insurance. Then the insurance company approved the procedure, so it cost very little out of pocket. I went from a 38H to a D and I'm quite happy!

I'm jumping in here with the Moving Comfort thing. It's sold by bra size - has a clasp in the back - cause really, if you have boobs - you can just pull something over your head and then try to "work it all in".... please!

I'm still super pissed at Lululemon for 1) discontinuing the very best sports bra EVER (that has lasted very well over the last five years) and 2) not going past size 12. Great subject! There is nothing that makes me hate my body more than bra shopping. Every single time I end up on the verge of tears telling my husband I AM getting a breast reduction. And I always spend close to $100 on bras that don't fit one way or another. I think most of the issue with finding a good bra is that the majority are probably designed by men. And I can't even get a decent fitting. I measured myself and came up with 34C. There is no way that's true so I went to the store and had them measure me and they came up with 34C as well. WTF?! I'm currently wearing a 34DD which I'm sure isn't right either but I live in an area where there are no specialty bra shops. I'm grateful for some of the suggestions offered here and will definitely look into them.

First, thank you to the women who recommend our bras! We fully comprehend that a supportive sports bra can be life changing for many women. That is why we go to great lengths to run biomechanics tests on all of our bras in every size. We won't just 'size' a bra up.

Every woman has a unique body and preference, that is why we make so many different styles. You can use our virtual fitting room to help find the best style for you. http://bit.ly/T8ERNq

We also invite women to be bra testers for us! Each style is 'girlfriend tested, lab approved.' We take our wear testers feedback very seriously. Here is how you can get involved! http://bit.ly/V1NAYL

Again, thank you to those who gave us a great recommendation. Hope you find the right sports bra for you soon!

Champion had a really great bra that I swore by for years... it was cotton and locked the girls down like nobody's business. All of the sports bras now are 'technical' fabric, and I don't understand why. Why good is wicking, if your boobs are whacking you in the face so you can't work up a sweat? I finally found a Champion 'high impact' bra (about 2 sizes smaller than they say it should be by tag size) that was a technical fabric that worked.. and then they discontinued it in black (Yes, I am going to sweat profusely, so please, give me something you can see through BEFORE I work up a sweat. I'm really wanting to look like a wet t-shirt contest while I am trying not to puke after a run). I swear, bra manufacturers are trying to punish women with real bodies.

Your boobs deserve better than a cheap bra, sports or regular. I am a 34DD and I swear by two different bras-Moving Comfort Fiona (major boob smashage, but no bounce when I run) and Lululemon's TaTaTamer (actually gives you two(!) boobs and locks you down). They are $44 and $58 and worth every penny. I run or do Crossfit five days a week, and I live in these things. I suggest getting to a Title Nine Sports, Lululemon, or a running store to get properly fitted. You won't be disappointed in a bra that actually fits you.

Champion makes a good one but the best one ever (EVERY) is made by a company that specializes in horseback riding gear. Its a "level 3" support and I think it goes up to an F. It has encapsulation, lift, compression and its long enough that it actually comes under them without tucking, which makes it even more comfy. It has eye-hook closures on the front, which I feel is a lot better than over the head or behind the back struggles. I think I found it on the Equestrian Collections site.

LOL! I about spewed at the image of slapping oneself upside the face with an errant boob! Mostly because I've done it...I can so relate to this post! I am also in the OMG HOWDIDTHEYGETTHISBIG category. Think 36H. I have tried so many sports bras that it's insane. And what's with sizing them s m l and xl? Can't we the actual bra size included, too? In most of these companies their XL is the equivalent of a C or D cup. I would need an XXXXL, which they don't make. My current solution is two wear TWO bras. One to squish them in and another to hold 'em down and away from my face. Sigh. One day.

Hi Jen,

My name is Hilary Heath and I started a new sports bra company called Sturdy Girl Sports late last year. I am a runner and a 34DD, and I wanted a high-support sports bra that was also comfortable and PRETTY. I didn't like anything in the market so I designed my own. Lots of personal testing. Lots of other C-DD testers too.

There isn't one sports bra style that works for everyone. And I'll tell you that what one woman loves about a particular sports bra another one hates, but I did put a lot of time & effort into my designs (they function and they're pretty) and I even filed a utility patent on the internal support structure used in all them. I am getting lots of positive feedback from customers. You can read some customer feedback on my Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/SturdyGirlSports

My current size range is 32-38, C-DD cup. I hope to offer more styles & larger sizes at some point but for now that's what I offer. I am a small, independent company.

Please contact me and I'll get you a 38DD that hopefully you'll LOVE and then maybe you'll write a different letter. My site is: www.sturdygirlsports.com. You can email me directly at: hilary@sturdygirlsports.com

Your problem is you're not going to a store (or looking at brands) that specialize in SPORTS.

Moving Comfort
Enell
Lululemon

Just a few that actually focus on SPORTS.

Hi! I work for Moving Comfort and I'd love to send you a sports bra -- we'll see how your 38DD's feel after a workout with our great bras! Please email me at christine.martin@movingcomfort.com!

Amen, sisters! I swear by Moving Comfort. They're also frequently on sale at REI and through REI outlet online, just FYI.

You need to try a MOVING COMFORT bra. They can be found at stores that specialize in running (rather than a regular sporting goods store). Their sports bras are my GO TO bra for support! I don't even mess with the typical name brand bras.

I'm tardy to the party but I just wanted to state that I am a full 36C and have this problem. They aren't giant but they are full of LIFE. I have to do the sports bra over my regular bra thing and even then, there's still a lot of movement. I totally feel your pain (and/or discomfort) and its infuriating.

Finally, someone who understands! I so hope they actually read this and do something about it. I'm so tired of either injuring myself trying to get the dang thing on or injuring myself while working out due to lack of support! You rock Jen!!!

Hi, I'm new to your blog but saw this and had to comment. I've been a runner for 20 years - and have never understood why they think well endowed women don't exercise! As with the others I have been using at least 2 bras for years until I found the UnderArmor for D cups .. they Zip up the front. What a miraculous day when I only needed 1 bra for my run!

Love your blog!

Bras in general are always a pain. Why is it that they only ever have the "average" sizes in the store? Girls with both big and small "girls" would like to try their bras on before purchasing them, and not have to order them online just because we're not a standard size! (I'm short, tiny, yet need a C... but that's a 32C... bra manufacturers seem to think that a C isn't possible for someone who needs a 32. Never envy the small girls. We have a whole separate set of problems... such as trying to look like an adult and not a student when I'm teaching teenagers, but that's another topic altogether. Rant done now.)

YES, YES, YES!! I wear a 40G cup, and I have the hardest time finding sports bras that, when I am on an elliptical machine, don't cause my boobage to fly up, smack me in the face, and knock me out. While that might make for a fun "ok-GO" video, it isn't something I'd like to experience. Title Nine does make really good sports bras with good support, but they are expensive as heck. I also like my Goddess bra that I can occasionally find on sale online. I swear I have spent hundreds of dollars looking for sports bras that keep the girls contained, only to be repeatedly disappointed. I have a similar issue with regular bras, but your post wasn't about regular bras. When you write a regular bra post, I'll submit an identical comment but without "sport". Bra companies, come on people. Talk to us big boobed women, we'll tell you what's up. Or, not, as the case may be.

I want to echo the trade up love. I don't love the price, but it is by far my most favorite bra, ever. I'm a 36D, so the "regular" bras fit but as a serious athlete finding one that holds the girls in place AND is comfortable for longer than 30 minutes is important - sometimes I'm in a 2 hour martial arts class.

I feel for you! Both my Mom and Sister have horrible back issues and bra issues. I've seen my mom in pain from hers. It's terrible. I've seen their struggles with exercising and I still don't understand why sports brads come in these vague sizes and in packaging that doesn't allow you to try them on.
There should be a HUGE market out there for a decent fitting bra for bigger cup sizes and not just DD.
The weight and the pull of it is crippling. My Mothers neck, back and shoulders are haunched from it.
I'm not sure what happened in the gene pool, but I'm about a 36 A... I can't make cleavage if I duct tapped them together. Needless to say I sit around in sports bras most of the time because I find underwire to be evil even for a small boob'd lady.
There are so few choices on both side of the spectrum. I've got a wide ribcage, but tiny boobs. Is there a 36 / 38 A - not really. I'm about to sew my own bra and construct ones for my Mom and sister at this point - OH and bathing suits? Yeh - NOT! You might as well find someone to custom design on and wear it for about 5 years if you can. Terrible.

To the lady from Soma (couldn't get the reply to work there) _ I love Soma for every day. But I don't think you guys have a sports bra option.

My Moving Comfort Fiona and Juno work great (although Juno can be challenging to get on and off, unless you learn how to dislocate your shoulders like those crazy cirque people). Juno has some nip coverage, while Fiona is not cold-weather friendly, IMO. I have tried many many different bras in the past few years since I started running and it is NOT easy to find something that works well, and that you can get on/off easily. UGH.

Heather in FL said...

Absolutely, this is what I was going to say. You NEED to get fitted at a real bra store (NOT like Victoria's Secret), and they'll have exactly what you need. They even have really pretty regular bras in your size. And once you find your size, buy one at that store, then go to Amazon and get one or two more. But an actual fitting by a real bra specialist (NOT in a department store) will make you wonder why you've never done it before.

That's what I have and love it! I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00284B79O/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Try having 32FF boobs! Order from Bare Necessities, they have pretty bras in the size you need. They even have sports bras that will hold those girls down...I mean down...they aint going nowhere! Lol http://www.barenecessities.com/32FF-Bras-300-Items-Per-Page_catalog_nxs,31,size,921,ppp,300.htm

The only awesome thing about being a 30A or thereabouts is the ability to give sports bras the middle finger and just pop on something designed, perhaps, for a ten-year-old. Unfortunately, I have to start thinking about this as I am beginning physio soon...!

Anonymous said...

Given my bone structure, I'm built a little on the wide side myself; that 30A number? That's in a properly-made bra, not the ones with +umpteen sizing. And all the cups were more like Bs than As. 36AA? What's that?

If you don't want to spend the money I did (let's just thank my aunt for the Christmas cash), either make your own or try the Coobie. Can't recommend it enough.

I love old navy workout clothes period.

I am going to give my average Bs a hug and consider myself blessed. I mean...not right NOW, cause that would be weird and kinky on your blog. But later....when hubby gets home, they're be properly praised ;)

This is going to sound crazy, but I went up to a DD while I was nursing my son and found the new VS sports bra was awesome. Took a little work getting in to it, because it is a racer back AND still a back clasp but once it was closed, it was great. NOT cheap though. I can't imagine that they'd carry a DDD in the store, but might be worth ordering...

They are very very expensive, but the service is great. I bought one that cost $80 bucks and it didn't fit right. So I sent it back and when they received it a customer service rep emailed me to help me find just the right bra in just the right size. She gave me her direct phone extension and the company offerd free shipping on the three other bras I tried and free return on the two I decided against. It was a process, but I found a great bra.

Yes! Moving comfort is the only one that is any good. I'm normally a 34 D.

Unknown said...

I'm a 44B (almost an A, sadly). And of course, plus size bras only come in HUGE cup sizes. I can never find a good, underwire, padded (of course) bra that fits me. The cups are always too big. Sports bras are the only time I can get a bra that fits.

Robin & Mark said...

Maybe this has been mentioned - - but TitleNine is AWESOME. Real bras for real women and their staff personally tries all of them and offers good insight on fit, support, etc.

I'm a 40 (one ddd, one f). I get all my bras at casique/lane Bryant during their bogo 1/2 off events. Not too spendy, they don't gouge out my shoulders, AND they're cute. And the sports variety actually makes running possible without knocking myself out

I didnt have time to read all the comments but im hoping someone has put you ladies into Enell bras. They will CHANGE YOUR LIFE!! Best sports bra on the market. Enell.com

Jen, you need to buy a REAL sports bra. Like one from a sporting goods manufacturer or a lingerie store. If you don't live near one, go online and read reviews. You probably need to do this for your regular bras as well; there is no way Victoria's Secret bras are really supporting your girls. If you ever make it to Chicago, try Schwartz's Intimate Apparel. It's old school, but that's what you need.

Aqua said...

They've probably already told you - but as a life long runner with DD's - Under Armour that zip in the front are great - tuck the girls in - zip and go - minimal juggling - even did a half marathon in one! We really need to help these folks with product development - as if well endowed girls don't exercise - ha

Jen,
I think with over 2,000 shares and 194 comment, through 6 degrees there should be SOMEONE WHO READS THIS WHO CAN ACTUALLY MAKE A BRA THAT WORKS! Now, I did all capital letters because I can't scream that at anyone. I want a well made, comfie, pretty, bra. Zippers don't work if you're aiming for pretty- unless you're into that kinda thing- hey I don't judge, just saying no zippers for me. 34DD please. Ladies at the lingerie department say, "they don't make many that size" I reply, "No, they don't make enough that size" Bra manufacturers get a clue: it ain;t rocket science.

Why are all of these old posts showing up in my Reader Feed? I love your blog, but am confused by the dating and reposting?

Thank you for this post!!!!! As somebody who developed very young and has 34H cup breasts after birthing two children...I can say that finding ANYTHING out there that can hold these puppies is almost impossible! I want attractive and supportive in my bra, and reliable and effective in a sports bra...is it too much to ask? I am sick of having to triple bra myself to run! I am tired of having to get granny bras just because they are the only ones that fit....

I am not big breasted but loose boobed after having 4 crotchfruits feed off these things. I have different problems. And just partially dislocated my shoulder trying bras on!

I also love Moving Comfort. I am merely a C, but because I had a mastectomy, the implants are more uncomfortable if they flop around than my real boobs were. Go to Title 9 Sports. They rank sports bras with barbells. Little boobs and yoga-like activities get a 1-2 barbells. They sell a few sports bras that are 5+ barbells. Expensive, yes, but so is the wear and tear on your real bra under a cheap and ineffective sports bra.

I used to have DD now I'm a D and Moving Comfort is awesome! I've been wearing their bras exclusively for the last 6 years.
