Pastor Sean Harris

Well, if this isn't everything I absolutely hate.  Have you heard of this guy yet?  Apparently, Sean Harris is a Pastor of a North Carolina church and on Sunday he gave his parishioners a "special dispensation" to "punch" their effeminate boys and "rein" in their girls so that they "talk like a girl, walk like a girl and smell like a girl."  The media got wind of this tirade and published his fiery rant that you can listen to here.  This is the quote:
"So your little son starts to act a little girlish when he is four years old and instead of squashing that like a cockroach and saying, 'Man up, son, get that dress off you and get outside and dig a ditch, because that is what boys do,' you get out the camera and you start taking pictures of Johnny acting like a female and then you upload it to YouTube and everybody laughs about it and the next thing you know, this dude, this kid is acting out childhood fantasies that should have been squashed.
Dads, the second you see your son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give him a good punch. Ok? You are not going to act like that. You were made by God to be a male and you are going to be a male. And when your daughter starts acting too butch, you reign her in. And you say, 'Oh, no, sweetheart. You can play sports. Play them to the glory of God. But sometimes you are going to act like a girl and walk like a girl and talk like a girl and smell like a girl and that means you are going to be beautiful. You are going to be attractive. You are going to dress yourself up.'"
Now that the media has outed him as an advocate of child abuse, the pastor has published a "clarification" where he says his words were misquoted.

Hmmm...I don't know, the audio was pretty clear to me.  I didn't hear anything that required clarification.  I heard him loud and clear tell his audience to punch their kids if they seem gay to them.

And we wonder why so many young homosexual people are killing themselves.

What a despicable person this pastor is.  What is wrong with this man?  What preacher gets on his pulpit and tells his followers to squash their children's behavior like a "cockroach"?  Where is the love?  Where is the compassion?  Where is the understanding for a child who might be struggling or might not be secure in himself or herself?

I am angry - no, I am furious - because Sean Harris is basically telling his flock to beat the gay out of their kids.  Actually, he's not even saying just gay kids need to be beat.  He's saying if your kid is just an effeminate boy or a tomboyish girl they need to be set straight - physically.  He's encouraging his people to hit 4 year olds.

Who are the people in church giggling and calling out "Amen" when he tells the Dads to "crack that wrist"??  It is disgusting and depressing to me that these people are parents and they can laugh at such pointed calls for violence against children who don't fit their ideals.  These people are supposed to protect their children and to love them unconditionally and instead they're chuckling at the idea of slapping the gay out of them like they're in a comedy club.  Even worse, they're raising a new generation of close-minded people who will continue on in their parent's path.

I am so tired of people like Sean Harris who just take the words of the Bible and twist them and turn them to suit their needs when they want to hate someone.  We all "pick and choose" the parts of the Bible we're going to hold gospel.  Everyone just picks different parts.  I'm going to pick "love your neighbor as yourself."

Maybe I chose my words wrong but I've been studying how parents should be and how children should be raised in church these last few weeks and it was strongly discussed how parents should treat their kids. There are quite a few new testament and old that talk about homosexuality as being immoral but there are so many more places that explain that we are not here to judge one another but to love one another. I am not taking what I want from the bible. I am taking what I've learned and understand. James 5:12 says, "There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you- who are you to judge your neighbor?" and also as I've seen in other posts, "He who is without sin, cast the first stone". I don't understand why we all have to get so angry with one another when, I think for the most part, we are all in agreement here that we don't condone what this pastor is trying to push on people. These people need our prayers.

Jill, I am sorry for the poor start in what I said. My iPad tends to drop the las letter on many words. I think because I type to fast. I want to clear something up. I did not say being was no more a sin than being straight. I said being gay was no more a sin than my SINS. Again than my sin. I did take notice of the mean spirit with which you delivered your misread. I forgive you for that. I know you probably don't want forgiveness but the forgiveness is for me. Hope I did make this hard to understand by the way I wrote it. I hope love and peace abound in you life.

Back when my hubs and I were planning our wedding I decided I really wanted to get married in the Catholic Church! As a kid I was never Baptized nor had I ever made my first communion or confirmation! I decided that it was important to me to finally go ahead and get baptized, etc., so I began taking weekly RCIA classes with a VERY sweet church Monsignor and his equally sweet sister who is a nun! One day while we were going over the bible I asked them about dinosaurs and the answer they gave me made more sense than any other answer I'd ever been given! They told me first and foremost that the bible can't always be interpreted in the literal sense! They said that in the book of Genesis it describes how on the first day GOD created light...on the second day GOD created water...on the third day GOD created land...so on and so forth! The thing is we as humans interpret a "day" as a 24 hour period of time. However, there is no such thing as "time" in heaven, so for all we know the reference to a "day" in the bible could mean thousands or even millions of years! Another reason why the bible should not be interpreted SO literally!

Apparently my replies were deleted somehow. Anyway...

According to the Bible, all sins are equal in the eyes of God.

You know what else is a sin? Debate, hypocrisy, eating shellfish or pork, wearing clothing made out of mixed fabrics, breaking the Sabbath (punishable by death), tattoos and piercings. Assuming you're a woman, let me add: speaking in church, sharing a bed with a man while you're on your period, or being in society AT ALL while you're on your period.

And don't say "Some of those are Old Testament, so they don't count". For one, yes they do count (Matthew 5:17-18). Secondly, in Galatians being "unclean" is listed as a sin. Those Old Testament sins were things considered unclean by God.

If you can't accept your children if they are gay, that makes you a hypocrite.

His condescension is tolerable, but my sarcasm is vacuous? Sorry to disappoint you @Ali, but this quotation has far better minds discussing it than mine. If you really want to get into it than do a little Googling. You'll find a lot about this verse.

I wanted to wait until the smoke cleared, but it doesn't look like it is clearing.
I live in a bubble in Southern CA where I don't see bigotry or racism; maybe because this state is progressive or because I don't surround myself with assholes. One reason I read your blog is I always agree with your politics, but I worry that for every blog like you that comes out and says how awful this is, there is another blog saying how wonderful this man is. Between this pastor and his followers and the evil racists who spewed vile things at the African Americans cast in the Hunger Games I fear for our young. I want my kids growing up in an accepting and loving world without this crap in their lives, yet here it is. Canada looks better every day. God help us all!

Thank you for this post. My daughter is always referred to as a "he" and my son has his seriously dramatic moments, but I don't think punching my kids is going to change that. In this day and age how can a pastor get up and tell people to beat the shit out of their kids for being themselves. Someone needs to slap him upside his head. I am a Christian and I believe we are to love everyone, God made us all and we just need to realize we are all different and that's whats amazing.

The problem is, Non-believers always say God is Love!!! God is supposed to be about love. Well, I've got news fot you people, God is just as much about Justice. He destroyed many nations and peoples - including women and children. He sent to their death many hundreds and hundreds of the very Jews he brought out of Egypt for being disobedient. He had the earth swallow them up - no warning - right on the spot! He sent horrible plagues to the people in Egypt to endure because of the Pharoah rebellion. Jesus came in Love to give it to those who will renounce disobedience an selfishness - and turn to Him.

If you don't believe, if you believe the Bible is a fairytale, well, you will be believing soon enough. What day will you die? tomorrow on the way to work? Tonight if you have to run out to the store? In 5-10-30 years? You only have till then to come to him. Otherwise, you will see that God takes vengence on the people who choose to ignore or insult or belittle him.

Well, here I am again. It's my Friday ( I have a sweet job) and I'm at the end of my bottle of merlot. I come to PIWTPITT for my weekly dose of reality and not only is Jen keeping it real, but she's taking up for us tom-boys too. Most people rant about gays now-a-days, and yeah, yeah, that's the equivalent of the interracial argument from 20 years ago, but really, where are the tom-boys in the picture? (Thank GAWD for spell check, cause interracial and argument are super-hard to spell when you have downed a bottle of merlot!)Seriously, to be a straight tom-boy is a total self-esteem deflator. You're not a lesbian, so that's a mark against you. You're not into hair, makeup or nail polish, so another mark. And then freakin Sean "Slap your kid" Harris steps in and says whack the individuality out of your kids. Whew, I'm glad he didn't write a "what to expect when expecting book". Damn.

Once again, Jen, if that is your real name...you have written truth and I salute you. Or I would if I could find my hand....

Psychologically speaking it seems to me that Sean Harris is projecting. I can guarantee that this man is very much closeted with a pad lock on it that was put there by those in his past. And the cycle continues.

I just don't understand any of this, it's things like this that make our world such a corrupt place for people to live in. Love each other and let people be who they were born to be, what is hating people who are not exactly like you ever going to solve?

I don't know if this makes a difference to anyone about sin and homosexuality, but personally I like the book of Romans, where after it says that homosexuality is a sin, it says "But who are you to judge these? For you who judge do these very same things. For no one is perfect, we all fall short of the glorious standard". (Note: This is not a direct quote, it is my way of summing up the entire second chapter of Romans). I support gay rights on the grounds that a loving God would never stop loving his child for being homosexual. :)

Harris is indeed disgusting,as are those in his congregation who supported him.

I've been wondering if you were going to mention any of these crazies. How about that Mark Driscoll character, heard about him?? They're all of the same vein and really need to stop preaching this vitriol. I'll hold them, you can do the punching. :-)

GAAAHH!!

OMG, I can't even think. All I have surging through my brain is rage and I want to scream and beat the crap out of this guy.

Telling people to slap their boys or punch them for being "too feminine?" Telling their daughters that they have to "dress up" and "be attractive" because, apparently, they aren't!??

Who the F does this guy think he is?!

OMG, my day has just been ruined. If I smoked, I would be chain smoking right now. What a low-life scum!
