The Fam at an All You Care to Eat Salad Bar

Yesterday we had to get out of the house for awhile so we decided to go out for lunch.  I was very tired of eating fast food and so I picked the Hy-Vee salad bar.  The Hubs had never been, but the kids and I go there sometimes with my grandmother and my kids like it.  He said he'd give it a try.

The sign on the salad bar says "All You Care to Eat"  I don't think Hy-Vee has ever met my family or seen us at a buffet.  It's not about how much we care to eat, it's how much we can eat.  The Hubs has a hollow leg and has been known to get up and take a lap around a restaurant just so he can make room for more food.  Plus, I have two kids that have inherited their father's hollow leg and can eat their weight in fruit and carbs.

The Hubs sees an all you can eat sign like that and takes it as a personal challenge to make sure the eating establishment loses money on him that day.

Poor Hy-Vee never saw us coming.  We went there to only have lunch - we did no grocery shopping (we never do there).  We bought our all you care to eat buffets and we dug in.

We added it up last night and this is what we can remember consuming:

5 plates of salad
3 chicken breasts
1 slab of ham
2 bowls of soup
4 pineapples
1/3 of a watermelon
1 cantelope
2 lbs of strawberries
1 lb of tuna salad
10 crackers
1/2 bag of corn chips
1/4 lb taco meat
1 bag of shredded cheese
2 cups Oreo dessert
1 strawberry shortcake dessert
1/4 lb trail mix
4 waters

As we rolled ourselves out the door the kids reminded us that Hy-Vee has a mechanical horse you can ride for free.  We stopped there and both kids rode the horse - twice.

I think it's safe to say Hy-Vee will have pictures of our faces at the register next time and tell us we have to least make a purchase before we eat at their salad bar and ride their mechanical horse.

Love it! Doesn't look all that abnormal to me (ahem . . .). :-)

I believe it's a contractual obligation to eat all you can at a buffet.

Let me get this straight... you said make a purchase NEXT time? Does that mean you guys all ate for free? If so that is the ultimate dine & dash. Congratulations you deserve your punch in the throat.

We purchased our meals. We just think Hy-Vee lost money since we ate so much vs. what they charged.

Oh you go girl! I am pathetic at those buffets. I WANT to make them lose money and then I eat one plate and I am beyond stuffed. Then an hour passes and in starving. I'm taking you with me next time to at least even things out.

My hubby makes me take an empty purse stuffed with Ziploc bags in it when we got to the all you can buffets! He not only wants to gorge himself there but he wants us to eat from it for the next couple days!!!

Hell, even if they did hypothetically dine and dash, given what Hy Vee charges normally for their groceries (there's some items that are a full $2 more than Wal-mart charges, I once did a receipt comparison and on a $100 shopping trip at Walmart and the same exact items would have been almost $140 at HyVee) they could eat the cost (no pun intended).

Our fam is a little tamer except for the hubby with the hollow leg. Have you tried one of those new Chinese buffets like Joy Wok? The food is actually quite good (hubs is half Chinese so he outta know). Friday and Saturday all-you-can eat seafood buffets include sushi, peel-n-eat shrimp, and steamed crab legs. I've never seen skinny little Chinese people down so much food in my life. Talk about hollow legs..

Our local Pizza Hut (yes, Guam has a Pizza Hut, but not much more) has buffet dinner on Monday nights - the kids price (12 and under) is 6.99.

Three of our four boys qualify for the kids price....
Two of those three are taller than me (5'3) and can eat a LOT of pizza....I think the record (and yes, it's a contest) is 17 slices by no-name 11 year old. Pretty sure that's $6 dollars worth.

We go almost every week.....every week they ask us, "How old is HE?" (giant 11 and 12 year olds)

I think they are going to kick us out if we don't come in for a birthday party soon..... although, their birthdays are December and January.
I have 11 more months of kids prices....

I have NO guilt.

Haha! My husband is currently TDY to Guam and he says that place has EVERYTHING! And from what he's telling me, there is definitely more there than here on Oki. He has talked it up so much I'm trying to get me and our son there for a visit.

Is there a time limit? I like to bring a neck pillow and some board games for the kids and make a day of it.

At least it was healthy food...it could have been an all you can eat buffet at your local Golden Coral and had filled your bellies at the never ending chocolate waterfall!

I applaud you and your family...

Great post. You should see my fam at a Shoney's. We shut the place down! We even had the police (who were there before we arrived) cracking up so they didn't see just how much food got shoveled from buffet to plate to mouth.

We don't have membership to costco and I considered getting a guest pass just for my family to walk around and eat all the samples for free. I figured that would be a good way to get a free lunch. Horrible, I know!

I worked for 7 years at a buffet/steakhouse, people go crazy lol. Buffet stands for BIG UGLY FAT FOLKS EATING TOGETHER! HAHAHA not saying you are any of the above, but during those 7 long years I found that to be mostly true lol. I have def met my fair share of interesting buffet harvesting creatures that deserved nothing more than a double punch to the throat!

And your kids didn't puke getting on the mechanical horse after eating that much? I am impressed!!!

...and i bet every single one of you are overweight!! theres no comparison between a hy-vee and walmart. hy-vee is a high-class, clean, upscale environment, staffed with knowledgeable, friendly employees; whereas, walmart can afford to be a penny cheaper here and there because they pay their employees a bare minimum and are not concerned with quality, just quantity...

I used to take all-you-can-eat as a challenge when I was a kid. Even now, I can still pack away a fair amount when hungry. Especially if it's Sweet Tomatoes after a week of junk food!
