Abercrombie & Fitch

Wow. My mind was blown today. A friend sent me this article about Abercrombie & Fitch.

Do you remember shopping there when you were in college? I sure do. (Do they still smell like a junior high dance where the boys put on waaaay too much of dad's cologne and they play the music so loud you might get permanent hearing loss?) In fact, I think I still have my classic Abercrombie sweatshirt in my closet. Well, apparently, we shopped at A&F back when they were selling "fuddy duddy" clothes. (That sounds about right for me. I have rarely been on the cutting edge of fashion.) Nowadays, A&F has this total jackhole, Mike Jeffries, running the company and he's doing a really kick ass job (stock price is up, sales are up, new stores everywhere, blah, blah, blah) and he has a secret to his success: he only hires beautiful, thin "cool kids" so that they will only attract other beautiful, thin "cool kids" to shop at his stores, because he doesn't want losers even setting a hairy, fugly foot in his hallowed halls. And just in case the message didn't get through to the uncool, the ugly, and the fat people that there is nothing here for you, Mike wants to make it clear that you're not welcome and so he has decreed that the women's clothing line will not carry clothing bigger than a size L or 10.

“In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids,” he told [Salon.com]. “Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely." - Mike Jeffries

When I first read this article, I didn't know if I was more impressed with the fact that Jeffries owns his asshole ways or if I was more disgusted that he's such a fucking dickhead who is desperately trying to hold on to his glory days of high school. (Actually, I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Mikey was a total la-hooo-zer back in the day. Look at how hard he's fought for those bulging biceps and how much he's paid for those sun-kissed locks - and eyebrows WTF? - and bee-stung lips. He looks like a genetically engineered geriatric douchebag.) He's an absolute creeper and I don't care how much he owns his actions, they're unacceptable.

I'm a dick, duude, but I'm OK with that, because I'm a coooool dick who hates losers and fat people.
When we have young women all over this country suffering from poor body image, I am disgusted that companies like this exist and are flourishing. A size 10 is big?? And it's not just the girls either. I've spent enough summers at the public pool to know that the average teenage boy doesn't have the chiseled body featured in A&F's steamy ad campaigns. (Luckily, they do make men's XL clothes, though, mostly to cater to the beefier athletes.)

For Jeffries to come right out and say his company philosophy is to be "exclusionary" makes me want to scream and burn my (Size XL) Abercrombie sweatshirt in effigy and break things (preferably a display of polo shirts at my local A&F). I am trying to raise children in this world who have a sense of self worth (that doesn't come from their stupid fucking jeans) and he continues to do what ever he can to make children feel excluded. Yes, teenagers are still children. And when a major company tells a teenager that they're not worthy of shopping at their store because her ass is too big what does that say to her? Believe me, she's already self conscious about that ass, she doesn't need Abercrombie & Fitch telling her that she's too horrible to buy a pair of their jeans. Nice work, dickhead.

In the 1990s Jeffires took over a dying company that sold "fuddy duddy" clothes and turned it into the Mecca of Morons. Reading the articles and looking through the photos of Jeffries and his young employees, made me feel sick to my stomach. This company embodies everything I despise. Ignorant, selfish, entitled, foolish, arrogant, elitist assholes who sit around with their fellow douchey "dudes" in their perfectly (identically) ripped jeans and their stupid fucking racist/sexist t-shirts with gems like "Tig Ole Bitties" and "Two Wongs Make a White" and yuk it up about raiding mommy's medicine cabinet or maxing out daddy's credit card while their asshole parents neglect them to spend time on the slopes or at the beach.

These are the same kids who tweet racist shit and tell their sorority sisters to stop being so fucking boring when frat boys are around. These are the same kids who received Participation Awards for every fucking thing in their lives and have that shit lined up on a shelf in their room, because that reminds them that they're precious snowflakes. These are the same kids who kill referees at soccer games. I hate these people more than you know.

My children are not old enough to grace the abs-infested aisles of A&F just yet, but the first time either of my kids asks for anything from this store, I will say Hell Fucking No. I realize that won't matter much to Mr. Jeffries. After all, I'm way too old, fat, short, and ugly to be allowed in his store. (I'm surprised he doesn't have bouncers at the door to turn away people like me.) He doesn't care what I think, because I'm not his clientele. Well, that's too bad, because he should care about me and other mothers like me. I am a mother who will influence and educate my kids about shopping consciously. I will raise kids like these girls who "girlcott" places like A&F. I will explain to my kids that we don't support companies that sexualize teens or marginalize people. We will put our money where our mouths are and we will buy our perfectly distressed $100 jeans ANYWHERE else, but A&F.

A&F can kiss my fat ass!

My sister was a recruiter for A and F about 5 years ago. She traveled to various midwest colleges to scout for potential employees. She was only to recruit attractive, thin people. It disgusted me then and it disgusts me now. Especially to see the face behind this all. He is gross. What a dick.

Ha! I was totally going to say the same thing...he looks like Elephant Man!

He looks like a recovering burns victim... apologies to any recovering burns victims out there.

I'm sure there's a discrimination law suit out there waiting to happen after his comments, I will watch this space avidly!!!

The mention of the Phil Collins song in the law suit reminds me of American Psycho. Nut job!!!

Ugh.... Yes there are other stores that sell what they want, and "exclude" others - but they don't exclude those others because they're not "cool" enough, they're specialty stores for crying out loud! What a pile of poo he is!

Anonymous said...

EB - They're pointing out the irony of him saying they only want attractive people to wear their clothes. And no, it's not better that they're being upfront. Nobody really expects that stores which sell bigger sizes are doing so because of ethics. Sensing some fat hatred in your "profiting off obesity" comment - should clothes only be sold for people under a certain size? Because hey, there's nothing that motivates people like exclusion, humiliation, and self-loathing.

Anonymous said...

Clockwork, what is your vendetta against Lane Bryant? And what, exactly, are you complaining about? Is it that Lane Bryant makes decent clothes for people whose size you disapprove of? Or is it because they only sell plus sizes? Either way, it's a ridiculous thing to be upset about.

Anonymous said...

Absolutely agree!!!! I can NOT stand the thought of one of my children being an A&F clone, nor do I really want them to be that popular. Popular kids in my day were mean, vindictive people who made other kids lives hell to score points with other cool kids.
I don't want my kids to be the school pariah, but really, only marketing to 'cool kids'?!? Ludicrous!

I'm extremely small. I was a size 0 in high school and bounce back and forth between a 4 and 6 now that I am in my mid 40s. However, I do NOT believe teens should be "smallish". Teens should be whatever size they are. Big, tall, small, large, muscular, slim, whatever... and NO store should make money off of telling an exclusive body size that only THEY are cool.

A&F?.....I taught my 8 kids never to go into such poor quality, over priced stores. Back in the olden days, 70's/80's, when clothing was still manufactured on this continent, the quality of clothing in A&F, AE and H&M etc., would not even have been good enough for any discount retail store. Instead of targeting a specific size of person, perhaps Jeffries should be attacking the very institutions that caused the problem. I am also curious for the d.bag to explain how a mom of 8, 5"4" , @ 125 LBS, 15 LBS gained over 25 yrs is now a size 2/4 vs. a 6, hmmmm......some serious BS marketing going on that they all created to make everyone feel good whilst they shop, and now he is excluding a subset of a generation of customers because they bought into it all? give me a break......what an ass, but WTH, he looks like he has been under some serious cryotherapy .........not one to talk for sure! Perhaps some stores should ban him from shopping cuz he looks so freaking scary? As the above poster said, shop with your pocket book and boycott all these kind of places.

Kate, the very fact that you spend time defending your 7 year old's body type - "she's very athleticm not just skin stretched over bone" says that you have alot of issues of your own.

Anonymous said...

Clockwork - get a clue (or a job at A&F).

Anonymous said...

As sweet as it is, please don't waste what precious little brain power you have feeling sorry for those of us who don't fit into A&F clothes. We're fine. Save that brain power for breathing (you can do it - inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale).

Anonymous said...

Maybe everyone who has A&F clothes in their closets should take them down to the local homeless shelter as a donation. Jefferies might have a conniption if he knew all his precious elitist clothes were now being worn by people he would deem as undesirables!

This guy just sounds incredibly bitter. Did he get beat up and made fun of in school? sounds like it. I got beat and made fun of too, but years later I'm not exactly staring back and hissing at them, I'm moving my own life forward.

Graham said...

Ummm, business doesn't work that way. A CEO isn't going to fire himself.

Graham said...

Heh, didn't realize the person who wrote the article was a girl. But still, licking your wounds years later will do absolutely nothing about him. If you don't like it, then start your own clothing business where you can incorporate your own values into marketing. Don't just sit there and be angry, that accomplishes nothing....get up, DO something about it. Otherwise....well, Torrid is right on the other side of the mall.

Anonymous said...

Amen, brother! Don't just piss and moan about the way things are, DO something about them!

Anonymous said...

You know, there are quite a few women out there who are both over 18 and under a size 10. My girlfriend is a size 4. And they may 'make the money' as you say, but they don't exactly spend the money. This is just their marketing approach. Dont like it? well, most malls also have a Torrid where you can pay high prices too.

Anonymous said...

it absolutely IS free enterprise. The guy is free to market to whomever, and however he wants. Dont like it? I'm sure there's a Torrid you can get your clothes from in the same mall.
Also, it's one thing to throw your hands up and cll bullshit. It's another to say plenty, but DO absolutely nothing. You don't like him, or his methods? then DO something about them, don't just piss and moan on the internet. How are you going to teach your kids to change the world to make it better place to live if all they see parents do is WHINE ABOUT THINGS? Be an example. Promote businesses with better, more unbiased marketing strategies. Or start one of your own!

By the way Ms. Clare, those 'laws' put in place to keep things from happening, are based on race, sex, sexual orientation, age.....in other words, things people have no control over. People can lose weight....just a question of whether or not they decide to.

Graham said...

Yeah, the poster of this comment was probably a troll. Let me offer a more thorough look at this, though.

this girl sounds pretty bitter. I understand that she doesn't agree with A&F's methods, but this just makes her come off as a girl who got made fun of in high school, and years later is still licking her wounds and hissing angrily at them. High school wasn't exactly easy for me either....weight training class was torture quite a bit. But I'm moving forward with my life, instead of looking back and scowling. And now she's angry at someone for being successful. Start your own business, with values that are opposite his. Get up, do something about it. don't just be angry, or you'l spend your whole life....well, being angry.

Yeah, the guy might be a douchebag, but he's got the money, and when it comes down to it, that makes him the guv'ner.

Anonymous said...

Maybe they just like the way the clothes look. WHy does everything have to be judged not only by it's quality, but by the personal opinions of people who make said products? It's like the whole Chik fil a thing. Just because the owner said he doesn't care for the idea of gay marriage doesn't make the chicken any less delicious.

Shannon said...

um yes, i'm 22 year old, 110 lb woman (i know, not there demographic because i'm not the current prom queen in high school or whatever) and i have seen their clothes. i'm pretty sure i would need a size L. actually, I'm positive.

plus, am i the only one who thinks their clothing is TERRIBLY ugly and paper thin and just weird?

Beth said...

While I woud love to punch this twat waffle in his fuggly face, I'm slightly a little happy that A&F is no longer selling larger sized skank clothes. Not everyone looks good in their clothes because they were designed with the skinny in mind, and that look is lost in translation to larger sizes. Now all we need is a retailer who understands this and begin to make clothes that carry the same style as the "cool kids" but makes the clothes to fit a larger person and look GOOD on them. Not just make the same thing in a larger size but with out the thought and care as to the different changes in a larger person's body...talking to you Shelf Bra cammies with the same tiny shelf as an x-small in the X-large size!!!

OMG, I thought the same thing. I had to google him to see what he looked like - and yep -- he has fallen to some bad cosmetic work...What a terrible business model. Now I get to convince my tween we can not continue to shop there...

Unknown said...

So if you find someone unattractive, you run screaming from them? Be careful -- you sound just like Jeffries.

Unknown said...

I don't understand this point, which has been made several times in these comments. "He is not attractive AT ALL. So how is going to judge other people."
So, if you're unattractive, you can't judge someone else's looks? But if you ARE attractive, you can?
It's these types of points that people make perhaps without even realizing the double standard they are setting up that make me realize I'm not surprised at all by A&F's policies.

You all act like us skinny people sit at home all day cackling to ourselves while planning our next evil escapade to make larger people feel bad. No. I just genuinely like the clothes, and the quality is actually good. I don't CARE what the CEO's opinion is. While I don't agree with it, I'm not there to see HIM, I'm there to get clothes. I don't see why you guys are making such big deal out of it. Idiots exist everywhere, you ignore them and go on with your life. Not everyone gets butthurt so easily.

I heard about this ass wipe earlier this week when I read Amy @ writehuman's letter. So proud of her for speaking up.
I started to become suspicious of A+F when they used naked models to model clothes they weren't wearing. Then they tried to turn their stores into hip clubs w/ dark lighting, too loud music, sales people w/ too much Axe body spray, oh-and some clothes. When I read Amy's letter my suspicions were confirmed.
My boys aren't old enough yet to chose where we shop for clothes but when they are this store will NOT be one of the options. And they will know why...wearing this label either says you agree w/ Jeffries "mean girl" attitude or that you could care less about the people he is hurting. Nope.

Doesn't bother me cause I nicknamed it Anorexic & Bitch a while ago and I don't spend money on clothes that don't last past one wash or a few more.

Wish I could find the photo of the person who Mr. Jeffries reminds me of- I think it was a woman, (not sure originally) but she was part of a piece on excessive plastic surgery and how people get addicted to it... I think he's fallen into that group... Have fun Mr. Jeffries, trying to discover something "real" with your fake everything.

I looked there for a shirt for my son this past year. He's 12 and is 5ft9 at 160lbs, football playing "beefcake" and their XL (if you could even call it that) left his middrift exposed when he raised his arms only half way. I had to step outside to make sure we weren't in Abercrombie for Kids, and we weren't. Needless to say, we settled for Hollister and American Eagle (which is my favorite).

I dislike A & F. Sick. However, I'm amazed at how much people are crying over ethics. Have any of you dug a little deeper into the food industry? At least A & F came out and said what was on their minds. The food industry hides (behind politics) and is basically making most of us sick. At least I can easily avoid A & F and any store that they own. Food? Depending on the budget, not as easy.

minniemama68 said...

Seriously??

I'm a larger woman who shops at the same stores you do. I have very skinny kids (have to have adjustable waistbands in their jeans, skinny). I have no problem finding stuff that fits them. I, however, have a huge problem finding the xxl that I need to wear. And the new "ladies fit" t-shirts?? I have skinny friends who wear a small have have to go up to a large because when you are in your 40's...

The guy is a douchebag. That being said, let him market to whoever he wants. Don't shop there. Don't encourage your children to shop there. Nuff said.

Normally I don't comment much, BUT - This is America. If you don't like his methods or his product, DON'T shop there! Simple as that. Quit bitching about how he's offended you. Let the guy be an ass, and let the company go out of business. At the end of the day, he may be a Grade-A Douchebag, but he is getting a HUGE amount of free publicity.

Tricia said...

Clockwork Orange, I honestly do not think people care so much that he wont make plus size clothing. It is his demeanor and arrogance that people have a problem with. No one would have said a word about him if it wasn't for his nasty comments towards sizes that he does not carry. It is the message he is portraying to kids growing up that if you are not a size 10 or smaller you are not cool and are basically worthless. This attitude of his is why kids have image issues and feel bad about themselves. He makes me sick!!!!

tara said...

As a mother, I have a huge problem with any product that exploits / sexualizes children . . . and for a long time I have put A&F in this category. The store at our mall is also very dark, which puts those of us "bordering" on 40, ahem, at a distinct disadvantage when surveying their padded bikinis for our 7 year olds. That being said, I disagree with the idea of a petition calling for the removal of this douchebag as their CEO. Just don't shop there and tell your friends why you don't shop there, and explain to your daughters why you don't shop there. Plus who really needs to buy their teen a $50 sweatshirt?

I dont think we should try to drive them out of business by refusing to purchase from them. I think a better punishment is to ruin their image by going and buying all of the sz lrg shirts and squeezing our size 14 and up bodies into them. All the "not cool" people (30-45 year old sz 14-20 MOMS) squeeze into these clothes and they will become instantly UNCOOL!

Pam said...

Being a cool kid has nothing to do with your size. My daughter is beautiful and a size 0/1 in 11th grade, and she is not one of the cool kids generally. I know plenty that are considered the cool kids that are larger than a size 10. It's all your personality. This guy just doesn't live in the real world. People don't like you because of how you look. It's how you make them feel.

Robert Harris said...

I have to agree with those who call the BS flag here. Anyone who is selling $100 jeans has already become exclusionary. Do you strive for or appreciate Gucci, Chanel, Burberry, Dolce&Gabbana, Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton? How many of you own Prada or, at least, would love to? Aren't all these exclusionary?

What about those of you who own a Mcmansion, the too expensive luxury car...aren't all of these exclusionary? Sure, you can own them fat or thin, but you just can't be poor.

I suggest we all be a little less outraged by what other's are doing and work on what WE are doing. You're child can't be made to feel bad about her body if you have raised her to feel good about it...no clothing line has that power. If your teen child can't fit into the largest size that A&F offers, then shop somewhere else...it isn't A&F's duty to accomodate you. And let's just acknowledge the fact that, if your daughter is too obese to fit into the "skinny" large, there is a better than average chance that the fault for her body image problems don't lie with A&F, but rather at home.

Laura said...

There is a difference between catering to your clients and demeaning others because your "idea" of the perfect teen and the fact your a douche. Victoria Secret says nothing about small chested women or extremely large chested women, they have all sizes. They sell items that are flattering to both. The last time I was in there, there were no guys selling bras or thongs. They also have women of all sizes, shapes, ages and races working for them because every woman needs underwear. So, I'm sorry, your argument is invalid...BTW, I would feel bad if I were a teen girl shopping in A&F and I am 5ft. and 105 lbs and I still can't wear their jeans.

Don't know why you're all so upset? When was the last time time you saw a 'Big Girl' on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition? Miss America Pagents? Or the Victoria Secrets underwear line up every year? Hollywood itself. All about sexy image, sillicon, air brushing, etc... Fashion industry is more notorious about the walking human hangers. Maybe A&F is just more honest about it.
Let the green bucks talk: don't buy their products and stop supporting these business ethics!

I don't like A&F because I find them to be over-priced. My 82 year old mother buys their shirts because she finds them to be made well. I don't think she noticed the models.

What a freak of nature! I am thankful for the article you posted and am proud to say that my 29 year old son, definitely an individual and free thinker, figured out long ago when just a lad of 16 or 17 that Abercrombie and Fitch is an institution for the weak, the feeble minded and the moronic who are followers, not leaders. These mindless zombies follow the pack blindly, fearful that they may do something out of step with the crowd, from the glossy mousse-y hairs on their head to the bottom of their correctly fitted expensive sport shoes, all Abercrombie and Fitched attired in between, (or some other correctly chosen label). My son went to prep school for the education, never afraid to be different, a leader, not a follower, boycotting A and F all the way. He is thin by nature, handsome by genes, and wears clothes that are clean. What we need in this world are leaders, not followers. A and F aficionados and their weak minded follower/ leader Jeffries are the lunatic fringe of the high school cliques. They may think they are hip and cool but they are, a-hem, followers!!! Copy cats, imitators, impersonators, apers, mimes, lovers of themselves and each other, bootlickers, prejudiced, intolerant bigots, closed minded. xenophobic, uncharitable, inflexible, small minded communists! Put that in your pipe and smoke it haters!

I have bought a few things at Abercrombie before, and I absolutely hate it. It's so overrated! I mean: you have to be thin as a RAIL to be able to fit in their clothes! I mean - I CAN fit in their clothes, because I'm a tad underweight, but even average-weight people can barely fit in their stuff! Not the best quality either. Bought a V-neck T-shirt there for $20 (wasting my $$$, I know!) and within two weeks there was a tear in the sleeve. Thank God I took home ec as a kid, so I sewed it back together, but still-quality is sucky.

When I was about 25 I went there and tried to buy a pair of jeans. I've never been a popular or "cool" kid, and I'm sure I am not attractive; I suppose I was trying to make up for that by shopping there.

When I was done trying them out I noticed one of the clerks staring at me. As I got to the counter to buy them, he said [definitely within earshot of the other employees and patrons] "You don't seem to be the type of person that shops here." (Subtext clearly being "you're not cool or good-looking enough to be shopping here.") I was flabbergasted...I was embarrassed and ashamed of myself...humiliated! I bought the jeans but never wore them even once!

This happened years ago but it still depresses me so much that I have not even gone on a date since that day.

Damn it sucks to be a loser...
