Patricia Krentcil and Tanorexia

Tanorexia?  Really?  There's actually a word for people addicted to artificial tanning?  If that's the case, then Patricia Krentcil is Bat Shit Tanorexic.  WTF???  Have you seen her?  Every time I see her on TV I just think, Why is that leather handbag talking?  And then I think, Oh wait, it's a woman...I think it's the lady from Something About Mary...Did they make another one or something?

Remember when we thought THIS woman was impossibly tan?

No, I refuse to let her hide behind a "medical condition."  I just don't believe it.  Patricia's problem is not that she's addicted to artificial tanning, her problem is she's a nut bar - with extra nuts.

I could make a nice love seat with that leather.  Oh wait!  It's a person!

This lady just proves that it is harder to adopt a dog than have a kid.  Parenthood is not for everyone.  Some people are just too dumb to be parents and this lady is one of them.

I am a slacker parent and I own it.  I don't always feed my kids the healthiest foods or answer their every beck and call.  This woman is beyond slacker.  This woman is plain irresponsible.

There should be a test everyone must pass to be a parent.  There should be questions like:  Would you ever make meth in your house? or Quick - there's a fire.  What do you grab first?  Your smokes, your beer or your kid?  I guess now there's another question that needs to be added to my test:  Is it ever appropriate to put goggles on your 5 year old and let her play in the room where you're basking in lethal rays of light?

Look, obviously Patricia Krentcil is not well.  I believe that she doesn't realize how bad it was for her daughter to come in the tanning room with her - thus the need for my parent trap test.  However, I don't necessarily think Patricia needs 10 years in prison to pay for this error in judgment, but I do think she needs some serious medical help.  She's definitely suffering from her addiction to tanning and I just watched this TMZ video that made me think she's a little cuckoo for cocoa puffs for more than just tanning.

You are totally right my friend! I couldn't have said it any better! When I saw this my jaw literally dropped to the floor! Now I've seen tan people before but never anything like this! How does one get this colour? I mean it is unbelievable to say the least! I guess she wanted to be a " DEEP FRIED GOLDEN GIRL "when she grew up!

I think it's easy to get addicted to tanning. My friend, who does1n't regularly tan, came back from a tropical vacation (obviously nicely tanned) and, within a week, was complaining she was too pale and wanted to go fake-and-bake. Trust me, she was not "pale", and I still don't understand how she perceived herself.

I had heard about this the other day (I'm from NY so this is more local for us) and at first I was definitely in complete agreement with you. I mean, clearly this woman has a mental issue concerning tanning. However, I've since heard that the daughter was playing in the lobby with her father and brother while the mom was in the booth. If this is the case, I feel bad for her. Because what it boils down to is if she wants to look like a purse, that is her choice. If she wasn't putting her daughter in that booth with her, she didn't do anything wrong and now this poor overly-tanned woman is being ripped to shreds on the internet.
I get the need to watch out for kids and potential child abuse, but it seems like a few simple phone calls could have cleared this up without dragging this woman & her family through unnecessary heartache. It's unfortunate enough that she suffers from tanorexia, now she's being made fun of ruthlessly. Though perhaps some good will come of it and she'll realize what she looks like and get some sunblock and lay off the tanning....

I just watched the video- is that woman an alcoholic or what? Most of her speech was slurred to the point that it was hard to understand her. Add the fact that she looks like a 68 year old woman and you have yourself an official train wreck! Is she really wearing a Madonna-esque BoyToy belt buckle??

Wow, she sounds drunk too.

Being pasty white, I love the glow of a tan, but that is just nasty.

Poor New Jersey, first Snooky and now Patricia.

Lol. I just watched the TMZ video of her, and she doesn't really help herself in any way. Still, it's gotta suck being trashed by an entire nation for just being tanned beyond belief. But a new question did just raise itself for me - would she be considered white trash?

I almost wrote about this yesterday, I'm glad you did! This lady is tan shit crazy. A Korean Prada looks better than she does. Myself, I'm a member of the Pale Force and always engage in the use of very high SPF sunscreen. This is just unthinkable to me. Thanks for writing about her <3!

I'm pretty sure both the father and the tanning salon people have confirmed that the daughter was never in the booth, but waiting outside for this whack-a-doodle.

I was wondering how long it was going to take you to get to her. I totally understand going after Preacher Nutjob first though. I feel sorry for the poor children. I coat my boys down in suncreen to walk to the mailbox. Who has a ginger kid and takes them to a tanning salon WTF!

Anonymous said...

I'm from NY as well. Thank you, I completely agree with you. If this woman didn't look like this and the same exact thing happened, we wouldn't be discussing this here. It's pretty clear this woman did not bring her daughter literally tanning. She brought her daughter to the tanning salon with her while SHE tanned. The mother needs pity not ridicule.

I work from home and keep the TV on for noise. Yesterday it was on CNN HLN which repeats every 30 minutes. This was one of the stories, and at the end, one of the reporter said, "Wow that house must smell like Bacon". I seriously thought I had heard wrong (I was only half listening), so when I heard it running again I stopped what I was doing and watched the segment. Yep, he said it. I watched the segment every time it ran and laughed every time.

We should all feel pity for her. Obviously no one cares enough to kindly tell her, "I'm sorry honey, but you look like a snickers bar that stayed on the shelf too long." The reason they think she took the daughter in the booth is because she showed up with school with a "severe" sunburn. The parents claimed she got it outside. I don't care where she got it; that's still neglect. That child has red hair!! She shouldn't be in the sun without a high SPF!

Deb said...

For the most part I get a good giggle about the things you write. Today, not so much. While she may be a little bizarre for her own addiction to tanning, look at the little girl. Does she look like she's been dragged into a tanning bed? Does she look abused in any way? She doesn't to me. She looks like she's healthy, well fed, has a clean home and well taken care of. Where are the photos of the burns suffered? It would have been the first thing documented by CPS. Now her little world is being turned upside down by child protective services, the court system, the media and all of you with ugly remarks about her mother. The person she probably loves most in this world. To me that is doing way more damage to her. Lets hope none of you let your child get a little too much sun while playing outside this summer. You may be next on the list.

The fist video I watched of this, was Purse Face herself saying she was in the bed and the little girl was in the room with her. So... the story has changed far too many times for me to believe that the little girl wasn't in the room with her. The little girl told her classmates that she got the burn at the tanning salon, not outside like her parents are saying. Purse Face definetly needs some help, ontop of the skin cancer she is sure to face from all that tanning, but also to help her recover from "tanorexia". I hope the Hubs and kids get counceling too so they know that being that ugly shade of tan, is not healthy or pretty.

Beth said...

LMAO. Love it. I worked retail and that is EXACTLY what we called over tanners. "Hey, Oopma Loompa in fitting room three wants a size 7 in these jeans"

Anonymous said...

Um, she looked and sounded pretty wasted in this video. This whole thing makes me feel so sad for this poor kid. Overcoming all the "joys" that come along with having a mom like that will not be easy.

imbogus1 said...

Why doesn't she appear that dark in the mug shot? I do think there is some darker makeup she has on during the video shoot. And yes, there should be a test before you are allowed to breed. Unfortunately, those in the shallow end of the gene pool would probably be the ones administering and grading the test.

Beth said...

Here's the thing. If CPS documented the burns, its a case about children, so they wouldn't release any of that to us. Also, does it look like her mother is trying to sheild her in anyway from this shit storm? Nope she's parading her in front of tv cameras to say how she is being unfairly treated. She is putting herself and her daughter out there for public fodder. I've heard about three different versions of how she got the burns, so that alone needs to be addressed. The girl told her classments she got the burns when she went tanning with her most cherished Mommy. The mom said she was in the room while she tanned because tanning is to her what grocery shopping is for those of us not suffering from 'Tanorexia". And the dad said she was in the lobby with him. So, the only person to blame for this public onslaught of character bashing, is her. I'm sure CPS didn't call the media outlets, she did. You should be worried that this little girl is in a family that is so quick to call the news when things don't go right, then those of us who are angered and sicked by this woman's careless attitude about protecting her own skin, not her daughters.

Anonymous said...

I dunno about this one. Maybe a little compassion is in order, rather than a punch. Further reports seem to indicate she is endangering herself rather than her daughter.

Not necessarily - I'm not sure exactly how paperwork etc is dealt with when CPS is involved, but I do know of a family who went through a heartbreaking situation that the media got hold of simply because paperwork was filed and it was a slow news day. (Basically a funeral home fucked up and a decedent was buried with something that wasn't supposed to be buried, so exhumation papers had to be filed to retrieve it. A reporter saw them and started a media downfall).

She is more well done than my basted turkey at Thanksgiving. Wait! That's it! She coats herself with butter instead of tanning lotion before she goes in. I love a great tan (in the summertime) but she's purely disgusting. I'm surprised a dermatologist hasn't pounded on her door and bitch-slapped her across Nutley. I feel sorry for her kids.

BTW, the tanning salon she had been going to revoked her $99/month membership. Didn't want the publicity. Go figure!!

Kp said...

You know, if you're at a bar and you've had too much to drink, the bartender by law has a right and responsibility to cut you off. Could we not institute something like this for tanning salons?

Anonymous said...

Just wondering if anyone knows the answer to this. If a bartender is responsible to cut off someone who has had too much to drink, shouldn't a tanning salon staff cut someone off for tanning too much? Are there not rules set up on how much someone can tan per day/week? Just like you can not go to a fitness gym and workout more than a certain amount of time per day.

Deb said...

@B, parading her around? In her own home? Maybe she's letting everyone see that the child is ok? First hand knowledge I know CPS would have taken photos to document. How do I know? I'm the caregiver and step-grandmother of 3 children who were removed from their family home from neglect. I've seen the procedure and also know how that affects a childs mind. The public is fueling the media frenzy madness. If you are so worried about how her addiction and abuse of her own body is harming her child, then every man and woman that tans, be it artificially or naturally, smokes, either legally or illegally or drinks alcohol should have their children taken or they themselves should be thrown in jail. $25K bail and 10 yrs, really? I guess it's better to be the teacher doing the abusing, all they get is a slap on the wrist and lose a job. Personally those wonderful mommies on Toddlers and Tiaras are doing way more damage than this woman. Is she a little off kilter, absolutely, does she need help, absolutely, does she deserve all this hate and name calling from strangers? No. Bullies in the playground is how you are acting. Everyone is so quick to judge.

pj said...

"Tanorexia" is not in the DSM now, nor the new version due out next year. It is a media-created word.

S said...

I would not think you could. Someone drinking alcohol is impairing themselves and could injure themselves or others due to the impairment of alcohol provided by the bartenders. On the other hand, tanning isn't impairing one's behavior and actions. They are not hurting anyone other than themselves. And I don't go to tanning salons, so I can't say for sure, but I think laws passed stating salons have to post somewhere that that tanning can cause cancer (similar to cigarette warnings), so it's not like they're not warning you.

I'm not saying they wouldn't document the burn, but they certainly wouldn't publish those photos. Pictures show the child is ok, she doesn't need to be present for interviews. As far as all the other addictions you listed, I think you're just being silly to prove a point. I get what you're saying but you completely missed my point of, if she really wanted to save herself and child the public outlash "No Comment" is sufficient. And as for calling me a bully, what are you then by judging me without knowing me or my background or more importantly, my education? You can't say "Shame on you" when you didn't fully comprehend my reply because you were angry I chose to defend the general public and voice my feelings about this mom.

Anonymous- weird, but the leak didn't come directly from a CPS worker taking it to the media, did it? It sounds like it was saught out by the media. That was my point of that CPS wouldn't call the media.

Athea Core Photography said...

While her tan is ridiculous (and humorous) my concern is more the impression of being drunk. I'm sure we all know these women, the ones that drink all day and lay in the sun, you know...drunks. Only instead of laying in the sun all day she uses a tanning bed. Now I don't know her nor do I have enough information about her life, but just from the interviews I've seen I would hazard to guess that she is a long time drinker and some of the girls features make me wonder if maybe mom drank while pregnant. This of course is just conjecture on my part and not to be a slam on the little girl but while we joke about how leathery and tan the mom looks what I mentioned above is far more concerning for me.

Also, as a fair skinned person I have had my share of sunburns and I would not even remotely claim it was neglect on the part of my parents. Even those with the best intentions sometimes get burned.

Love your blog Jen!

When I was in grade school, I had a horrible over bite - one of the worst my orthodontist had ever seen. Braces were not cosmetic for me - they were a medical necesity due to difficulty talking and eating. And yet, the kids in school found a lovely name for me and it stuck my entire school life until I finally graduated and left that hole in the ground.

This woman looks horrific, I will admit. But, so did I. She deserves your ridicule no more than I did and her daughter most especially does not. Yes, her affliction is self induced, but in the majority of cases, so is obesity and yet it is not polite to make fun of those with "extra fluff".

Perhaps she is making bad choices with the media. But how many of you have ever been in the national media spot light? You have NO IDEA what kinds of choices you would be making because your decisions at the moment when this is happening are different than what you might make if you were quietly watching it on TV.

What good are all of the snarky comments doing - other than making you feel better about yourself and showing the world your true nature? Are the comments about bacon or snickers bars helping her or her daughter in any way? I like a good joke just like anyone else, but jokes are really only funny when the person they are about is laughing along, too.

There's a saying that goes something like - the truth of one's character is shown when you do something and no one is watching. If you wouldn't say these things to her face, if it would hurt your feelings if it was said to you - why say them at all? What does it say about what kind of person YOU are? I'd rather look like her on the outside than be like many of you on the inside.

Totally agree with Jen. Utterly disagree with 'anonymous' from New York and here is why: parents have a responsibility to provide an example for their impressionable young children until they reach an age to question and perhaps go their own way [Hopefully when they become responsible and PAY their own way]. The problem with people like you, who worry about everyone ridiculing this poor woman [who obviously needs psychiatric help] and thinking she needs a hug and her hand held is that the world just isn't that dang easy! Grow up. The world is a harsh place and we need to grow fighters. We need to raise and educate wise, strong young people who will SURVIVE and not feel like crying when they get criticized [for being pale], don't get a freaking gold star, or the trophy for just showing up [uh hello? certificates of participation? what the ---?]

Yeah, we would probably NOT be as harsh if she looked less like Jurassic Jane, but that's why it made the news you silly person. People who have problems like this truly do need some help. The entire family badly needs therapy. The spouse is an probably an enabler and I worry about the kid growing up with body image issues.

Ultimately though, it's f@$#ing entertaining to ridicule this person. When we do, it's sort of a form of natural selection. When we laugh at Jurassic Jane, the Daffysaurus, we are saying "NO this isn't OKAY and you need to go and GET A CLUE and we are really worried about your CHILD".

Christine said...

Fair point on what threelittlebirds said, but if we arrested every person who wasn't setting a good example, we'd have a whole different kind of problem.

Anonymous is right that if she wants to look like a leather purse, that's her call. Do we have the right to publicly drag through the mud everyone who chooses to look ridiculous, at the expense of their health? That means we should be publicly excoriating all the women with crazy breast implants, excessive plastic surgery, stupidly high heels...if they happen to have kids.

There are some things that are obviously ridiculous (this is one of them...and Pam Anderson boobs would be another), but where's the line?

If the follow up reports are correct and all this was was a kid playing in a safe place while mom barbecued herself, and if that's something the police could have reasonably determined without arresting her, her rights have been seriously trampled. I'm not a fan of lawsuits for every little thing, but if I were her, I'd consider it in this case.

(But a stipulation on any judgement she wins ought be that she first pay for psych help, because she's clearly on bar with anorexics in terms of messed up body image.)

Christine said...

I don't know how the media got the story, but it's not fair to assume that Mom made it happen. Her arrest would have been public record. Most papers/television stations/etc have people who keep an eye on those specifically to look for "newsworthy" stories. Child abuse via tanning would have caught their attention.
