Peaches Geldof

This post was originally written in September 2012. I just read today 4.7.14 that Peaches Geldof died of an overdose. My heart breaks for her children. No one should lose their mother at such a young age.

When I heard about this story last week, I thought to myself, "See, it doesn't matter how much money you have, you can still be a bonehead mother."  In case you don't know Peaches' story, let me bring you up to speed.  Peaches Geldof is semi-famous because she is Bob Geldof's daughter.

She was pushing her baby in London in his pram (i.e., stroller) when she says she hit a pothole or something and the stroller tipped over.  The stroller dumped her unbuckled baby out.  This was horrible, it could happen to any of us, right?  Of course.

But here's the difference between Peaches and MOST mothers.  When the stroller tipped, Peaches was on her cell phone and she was photographed making every effort to avoid dropping her cell phone and/or ending her phone call WHILE she tried to get her baby off the sidewalk.  Never once did she put the fucking phone down and pick up her baby.  Here are the pics and what I imagined the conversation went like:

"And so I told that bitch..."

"Oh shit!  Hang on, my stroller just tipped over!"

"You still there?  Did I lose you?  OK, thank goodness.  I almost dropped my phone.  I would have been so pissed."

What?  The baby?  Oh yeah, he seems OK.  What were we talking about?

What kind of mother does that?  I'm so glad her phone was OK.  I wish there was a Hallmark card I could send her to let her know.

What surprised me the most about this story was that I found it published on a Facebook page for Babygizmo.com with basically the same point of view that I have and the site actually got lambasted by their readers for being so judgmental.  There were a lot of "we all make mistakes" and my favorite "she might have been on the phone with 911."  Are you fucking kidding me?  This chick was not on the phone with 911!  Plus I take offense to being lumped into the category "we all make mistakes" with her.

Listen, I don't choose the well being of my fucking iPhone over the well being of my baby who just toppled out on his head on the fucking sidewalk thank you very much.

  1. Wow - I can understand if the phone was already under her chin, (well, OK, not really), but the fact that one minute it's in her hand and the next it's back under her chin while she's trying to retrieve the baby...? All I can assume is that it was a loving parental figure on the other end and she was so shocked she didn't know what to do other than ask them what she should do. No? No. Me neither.

  6. Ha! Once I saw a lady talking on the phone while pushing her baby in the stroller and the baby was strapped in but the baby was so small that it had slipped through the strap and was being held in by it's neck. The lady had no idea. I stopped her and she fixed it but never put down the phone. Priorities!

  7. jen, i love that this post is about 3 paragraphs, because that's just about all of your time that this dipshit woman deserves. and since she deserves a potshot, WTF are those shoes (and with cutoff jean shorts???)??? my mom's style from 1990 called, and wants those back.

Actually I like the clothes. I can't wear heals so the shoes are fine w me. Just dont know why you wouldn't strap in your baby in the first place?

Some wonder why it is illegal to talk on the cell and drive in some states. Yet another reason - we have dipshits in society who can't even walk with a stroller while on the phone.

Could NOT have said it better. I saw this picture last week and was horrified that she never put down the damn phone while her baby was upside down on the sidewalk. Yes, "we all make mistakes" but she is just an asshat.

  10. That poor baby! Maybe she really was on the phone with 911 so she could get help for being such a twatwaffle, and then the pram tipped and..well...she already had 911 on the line!

One bad time, I had forgotten to put the brakes on on my stroller. I was putting my toddler in her car seat when a gust of wind sent my stroller down the sidewalk, over the curb and into the street, (by parked cars) and tipped over. Both me and a good samaritan ran after it. Luckily, my baby was STRAPPED INTO HIS CAR SEAT, and was fine.

So, while I can't judge the actual accident, because it happened to me (you could say that no brakes=on the phone), at least I had strapped the baby into the car seat. Peaches is lucky the kid didn't go flying out of his seat and sustain serious damage.

not only didn't she drop her precious phone, but her fucking purse too! WTF??
This sorry excuse is now on the top of my list of dumb asses that needs to be bitch slapped!

    ReplyDelete
  16. So according to that website, we should assume that she knew that the baby was going to fly out of the car seat so she was on the phone with 911 before it even happened?

    ReplyDelete
  17. You know I saw this on the show "the talk" last week and when I first saw it I thought, what an asshat! Then the ladies on the showall started saying how it could happen to anyone, no big deal, etc. I didn't get it! I understand that you can hit a pothole and have an accident like this. However I do not get not dropping everything to help your baby! I freaking hate people on cell phones and I hate even more when moms are careless with their children while on their cell phones. Last week I almost hit a basket with a baby in it because the f'in mom wasn't paying any attention to her surroundings. So I back out andbacked up and told her to get off the phone. I know real mature, but I didn't cuss or anything...

The sad thing is that despite this display, Peaches can still say she is better than her own mother. That one was a piece of work.

  19. And THIS is proof of what cell phones have done to our society...all of a sudden, whoever is on the end of that line is sooo much more important than the people actually around us at the moment. Remember the good old days when proper etiquette was for a receptionist to ask the person on the phone to "hold please" to speak to a LIVE person?? How many of you have been kept waiting somewhere while the person on the phone is handled first...seriously annoying. Now everyone has to be available 24/7 just to find out that their BFF's manicure got f--ed up or to schedule their dog's next grooming. Weren't we capable of handling all that crap before cell phones? Hang up and join us in the real world already!

  20. Sadly, she hasn't had a shining example of parenting, her mother (who was not a great parent, died of a drug overdose when she was pretty young) and her father has spent more time trying to save the world, than parent and the kids were pretty much left to get on with it, so I am not entirely surprised. Yes, we all make mistakes, my son fell down our stairs yesterday, he tripped and fell, I was there as it happened, couldn't catch him in time. it was one of those accidents which happened, shouldn't have happened, and I feel dreadful about it, but the doctor in the ER was right when he told me "these things happen", fortunately he was fine (I think I was more upset by the whole thing than he was) but she could have put the phone down, at least.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Sure, the tipping of the stroller *could* happen to anyone, but the thought that keeps running through my head is that, if she was paying a little more attention to where she was going in the first place (and not *as much* attention to the phone call), the stroller might not have tipped. Then the paparazzi wouldn't have caught her in a bad mommy moment.

  22. I have never heard of lil Peaches so she makes no difference in my life but she seems so sterotypical of trust fund babies. She's an idiot. That baby has a better chance of being raised by the nanny. I am by no means a perfect mom but that is careless. Get off the damn phone.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You know if she had a Bluetooth we wouldn't even be discussing it, she could have yell profanities at the other person while using two hands to pick up her baby. I can not think of anything important enough to not drop when my baby is on its head. Not coffee, not my expensive purse (which I don't personally own) or an expensive phone. Baby always = number one priority.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Rebecca10:35

Because it would have been so hard to yell, "I'll call you back." Good grief. I don't appreciate being lumped in with her kind, either.

  25. "I'm so glad her phone was OK. I wish there was a Hallmark card I could send her to let her know." - HA! Brilliant!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes, these things happen. I don't think anyone is saying they don't but the bigger issue is that she shows no sense of urgency about her baby catapulting out of his stroller. I have two kids and yes, we have had a few accidents here and there but I always react with a sense of urgency. Period.

    2. absolutely, not just this instance either but how many horrific images do we see in the media when the stupid cameraman or photographer should have set the stuff down and offered to help. And now with everyone having the ability to record things with their phone the first thought is I should take a pic or video instead of call 911 or offer to help.

      Delete
    3. Pretty sure the idea that paparazzi are douche bag lowest denominator of mankind is already a proven fact...

      Delete
    4. I don't agree. The paparazzi was probably much farther away with a zoom lens, for one, and as much as he/she sure as shit could have dropped the camera to help, this probably all happened too fast for any semblance of humanity to pop up. I mean, look at the paparazzi who chased Princess Diana. They have totally different priorities, their JOB is to catch shit like this. HER job as a fucking MOM, is to make sure shit like this doesn't HAPPEN. And yeah, we all have had airhead moments, but really? I left my computer in an airport terminal when my first child was 9 months old and I was still getting accustomed to lugging around twice as much crap as before, and it was late, and I was exhausted, and the only thing that comforted me about losing a computer I had JUST purchased a month before was that at least I didn't leave MY KID. There are mistakes and then there are completely wacked out priorities and this is the latter. The paparazzi are not innocent bystanders, they're there to capture shining moments like these.

maybe she's on hold with customer service and doesn't want to lose her place in line...I get that (OK, not really)

  31. I can't believe she had the frame of mind to hold onto the phone at all. Years ago my daughter fell down the carpeted stairs inside my home, when she was 18 months old, and I was behind her on my phone. I dropped that phone so fast to try to save my baby. (She was fine, by the way.) This idiot actually took the time to move the phone to her shoulder, BEFORE picking up her baby. This infuriates me.

    ReplyDelete
  32. how about gettin a regular stroller with some decent wheels...and maybe a blue tooth.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The real question here is whether it was her first child or her third or more. I remember splitting my head open when I was a kid (back in the sixties, mind you). My mother was on the phone when I ran upstairs to show her and she said, "well, my kid just showed up bleeding. I better let you go and get him to the doctor..."
It seems to me that you're going all mental on her because she was a lot more calm than a typical OAM should be. I'm thinking, "kudos to her for not treating it like it was the Hindenberg crash," and everybody else is freaking like it was.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. How exactly is concern for your infant's safety being an OAM? My 3 year old (at the time) daughter tipped the stroller that my 3 month old son was strapped into, and it fell in the same fashion as this stroller onto a tile floor. I was freaked out until I was able to check him over and make sure he was okay. The baby landed on his head. Most parents tend to relax a little as their kids get older, but chances are even your mother was freaking out on the inside, but keeping a calm exterior for YOUR benefit.

  36. What do ya'll expect from someone named "Peaches"? Personally, I think she should have been more concerned about her shoe choice than about the phone....

    ReplyDelete
  37. I actually screamed "Oh shit, I've gotta go" into my iPhone and THREW it across the yard when my 10 month old tipped his walker off the edge of the carport. Fortunately he was ok. And 10 minutes later I picked up my phone to make sure the person I was talking to had hung up. Moral of the story: weird crap does happen with babies involved - but my baby is way more important than a stupid phone or the stupid conversation that was taking place.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yup, anyone could hit a pothole and have a stroller tip. Yup, anyone could have either forgotten to buckle, or just made the choice not to strap the baby (for whatever reason). You're walking, you think the baby will be fine. I get that. Totally not judging the accident. I won't even REALLY judge that she was on the phone while pushing the baby. It's not great parenting, but it's 2012 and a socially acceptable, though not desirable behavior. BUT I TOTALLY judge the not immediately dropping the phone and giving her poor scared baby her full attention. I happened to be on hold with the car repair shop at the playground the other day - seemed like a pretty important call at the time. I was wearing my infant and watching my toddler climb up to the slide, but my focus was split. Just as someone FINALLY began to talk to me to tell me when I might expect my car to be functional, my toddler slipped off the ladder and fell. I literally threw my phone to the ground to help my child, and someone later brought it over to me as I was consoling her on a bench. That phone and that call did not CROSS my mind. Supermom? Uh, yeah, not really, just not self-absorbed pseudo celebrity whose child is an inconvenient accessory. Yeah, we're all human, but this is just sad.

  39. I love your blog, but please don't criticize other moms. Aren't we all just trying to effing get by?!?! We all mess up...the baby is fine (right?!?!). Let's try supporting each other for a change...I am sick of this "got-cha" society! Don't be a part of it! Look...if you want to crack on that 'Honey Boo Boo" bullshit...do it! They put that out there and its edited so someone is making a lot of money...hate it! But don't bust on a mom, no matter how rich she is, who is out taking her kid for a stroll. Jeezus! She isn't criticizing all other moms or all moms taking their child out for a stroll ~ she's criticizing STUPID moms and IDIOT moms that have their priorities so fucked up that they don't know their heads from a hole in the ground. Cutting these morons a break is exactly what's wrong with them. The "shit happens" society is the problem.

    2. If her post was flaming other moms for co-sleeping, or home schooling, or some other parenting choice that isn't mainstream, then I would agree that you had a point. This however is not one of those scenarios. This isn't like when a few years ago Britney Spears was photographed tripping while carrying her son. Britney was in tears over that situation, because as messed up as the rest of life was, she was actually concerned. Not once in any of these photos, does Peaches even look concerned.

  40. Prime example of parenting fail logic: The deductible on her AppleCare insurance was more than the co-pay for her child's health insurance; cheaper to save the phone.

  43. Good lord! There's no way she was on the phone with 911, unless she's psychic and KNEW her stroller was about to hit a pothole and her baby would fall out.

It's sickening that she couldn't put her phone down for 30 seconds and give her full attention to her baby. Ugh. Wonder if she bothers to buckle the poor kid into the car seat?

    2nd pic-
Hmm where did that pen go?? Let me dump the stroller out to find it cause I know its in here.
    3rd pin-
There it is! It was under the baby, geez. Ok let me me know what it is...
    4th pic
Actually just text it to me cause this child is crying how since I took the pen away I guess.
