Dog Pedicures

You look like an ass when you walk your bedazzled dog.
Photo: Dog Community
OK, so I already hate the trend right now where everyone paints shit on their nails.  Who needs stupid owls or polka dots?  When did this happen?  What's wrong with pink or a simple French manicure? Why did it have to get so fucking complicated?  Why do we feel the need to bling everything? They're fucking nails.  They help you pick your nose and dig shit out small crevices.  There is no need to make them works of art.

The human nail obsession has been driving me crazy for a while, but today I saw something that pushed me over the edge:  Doggy Pedicures.  Not just a usual toenail clipping or something like that.  Nope.  Dog owners have decided they want their pup's paws to look as ridiculous as their own.  There is not one, but TWO companies, that make nail polish for dogs.  (BTW, I didn't even know a dog needed special nail polish.  If human nail polish isn't good enough for a dog what the fuck are we putting on our nails??)

I spend a lot of time ranting against overachieving mommies and now it's overachieving dog mommies' turn:

Absolutely not.  Stop this nonsense right now.  It's ridiculous.  I know you love your dog, but come on, your dog looks stupid.  It's a dog!  She's an animal who uses that bejeweled paw to scratch her ass.  She digs in the dirt and slobbers.  Your dog does not want to be "spoiled and pampered."  Your dog wants you to pet him and take him for a walk and not forget to feed him.  My guess is, if you take your dog for a pedicure that will make him look like a hooker, he will hate you.  Plus, this is such a waste of money.  Stop spending money on dog Pawlish and send that money to the Humane Society or something.

Where does it stop?  Apparently humans have run out of things to dye, pluck, enhance, bejewel or laser so now we've moved onto our pets.  Right now, it's just dye jobs and pedicures, but I'm afraid that soon you'll see a bulldog with her owner's face tattooed on her tummy or a badass Doberman with his ears pierced or a sure sign of Apocalypse:  a vagazzled Chihuahua.

HAHAHA!! Omg, this is too much. BTW, they do offer dog tattooes at the same time as spaying/neutering. In California at least (go figure). My dad had an ID # tattooed on his Yorkie so that if she got lost they could easily identify her. Keep in mind that he is a moron.

My dogs would be humiliated if I tried to paint their nails OR put them in sweaters. For the love of God, why do people even THINK their dog would want something like this? This is simple stupid human vanity at its finest. Morons!

I have a Pug. They are short haired dogs and get very cold in the winter. I REFUSE to put a sweater on him. It's a dog. My take - go do your business faster so you can come back inside.

As far as the painting the nails and dying their fur - fucking insanity.

pet id tattoos are really helpful in the case of a tagless, lost or stolen dog. i don't really see the difference between that and microchipping...

Anonymous said...

Then Vajazzling must really piss you off. Talk about insanely moronic!

Absolutely INSANE.These people obviously have more money than good sense.

The difference between a tattoo and a microchip would be PAIN.

This isn't about dogs, but I work at Barnes and Noble and in the art section we have a book about cats...painted. Google "Painted cats" and you can see how crazy people can be :)

I've never bedazzled my dog's nails or paid anyone for a doggie pedicure but in the past my daughter and I have painted our dog's nails bright pink for the summer. Our little girl thinks it's great, ((get ready to roll your eyes)) because then we paint her nails the same color as the dog's. We do it on our own time, for free, for fun. The dog couldn't care less.

You can't imagine how much attention our dog has gotten with it, people fawning all over her, giggling, enjoying her white paws/bright pink nails. If painting a dog's nails makes someone feel happy (by being silly) then why not? I wouldn't PAY someone to do it, but there's no harm. It's cute. But you are entitled to your opinion!

Jessica said...

More disturbing are the freaks that get fake balls for their male dogs who have been neutered. Wtf is wrong with these people?!

Anonymous said...

My handicap sister loves painting her chihuahua's nails. Her dog also couldn't care less. And it makes Cheyanne happy, so what do I care.

Chica (the chihuahua) also has sweaters. Originally, we got them for her to wear in the winter (in Alaska!). But Chica loves them so much, if you pull one out she goes nuts, running over to you and in circles. So now Chica wears them all the time.

I buy them off the discount rack for like $2 each. If Cheyanne is happy, then I'm happy.

All that being said, it doesn't mean I don't think it's silly!

Wait....what?! Fake balls?? WHY?!

I actually do buy the clothing for my little chihuahua but it's the cheap 7.99 things from Wal-Mart. Mainly because the thing looks like it is freezing half the time. The painted nails too far but I've seen worse. About a yr ago at the vets office there was a woman with a chihuahua that had three piercing per ear. Three! She couldn't traumatize it once but had to do it six times. That is a woman you want to punch!!

Anonymous said...

I took my 3 dogs in for their regular clipping to a new place. I had no expectations other the clean trimmed dogs!!!'. I picked up 3 very irritated dogs with neck kerchiefs, flowers on their ears, top knots. AND ear rings. Which was little plastic jewels glued to their ears with Elmer's glue. Took them home after laughing and my 17 y/o daughter said. Seriously. The dogs got bedazzled She quickly soaked off the ear rings and everything else and returned them to their dog state.
I would tattoo my yorkie on the belly if she ever goes under anesthesia For identification purposes. Yorkies are one of the most commonly stolen dogs here. Can't argue with a tattoo and very easily identified

meanwhile, no comment on the photo of the dogs' nails? they're painted like the Italian flag. Could this be Snooki's dog? Is this dog from Jersey?

(I'm Italian, and from Jersey, so I can say this. and I'm not one of the guido types that would do this to her pet. I'm too lazy to even own a friggin dog. My cat does her own business on her own time and reminds me to feed her and we get along great.)

I agree with the who polish and bling thing, but the idea of the tattoos is actually very helpful, and it is usually painless for the animal, as they are usually asleep. It is usually done during surgical procedures, and with the over population of unwanted animals, this helps vets and other people id when a dog has been spayed or neutured. Of course on male dogs it is easy to tell, but on felmales, this can save them from going under the knife again, only to find out that they have already been spayed. Also, they sometimes "clip" a cats ear after it has been fixed. So no, the tattoos on dogs does not make someone a moron. the thing with the microchip is that most vets, pounds and shelters do not scan the animals to see if they are chipped.

One time hubs and I dropped off our Boxer, Lola, at the dog sitters. When we came to pick her up a few days later, not only had she swelled like a gorged tick from non-stop treats, the dog sitter had painted Lola's claws hooker red.

I guess it should have made sense when we dropped Lola off and our dog sitter came out with a glass of wine in one hand and a can of beer with a straw in the other.

On Christmas Eve.

Kristen said...

Any animal who has no compunction about taking a dump on someone else's lawn in full view of any passerby is probably not going to hate its owner for making it look like a hooker. That's not to say that I won't think the owner ridiculous and discount every single thing that might ever come out of that person's mouth as inanity. I totally get the people who say their children or mentally challenged siblings do that. But I also would not trust information from their mouths about anything in life (finance, law, news, weather, whether the lady who moved three doors down is a lunatic) either.

If it's not harming the dog people are free to do whatever frivolity they want with pedicures or outfits. But they might want to accept that the rest of the world might look at them with a little less respect as a rational adult human being as a result.

Thank you Thank you Thank you. I have been annoyed with ridculous dog owners for years. Seriously, if you nothing better to spend your money on than dog polish, dog clothing, or dog jewerly than PLEASE DONATE that money to the humane society. Also, get real, your not doing it for the dog your doing it for yourself. Pets HATE this stuff. FYI, putting clothing on your pet makes them COLDER. Animal's fur insulates the air around their body. Clothing mashes down their fur and prevents it from doing its job. If your going to make your pets cold and misearble by piercing, poking, and mashing down their fur than please be honest about who you're really doing it for.

Thanks Jen......now I have to cancel me and my dog's joint butt-hole bleaching appointment. We were totally looking forward to it as a great bonding experience (not to mention the super cute new sphincter) LOL

Anonymous said...

First, your dog is not an "it", he/she is a living being. Having said that, I loathe clothing dogs for "looks", but with some of the thinner haired breeds who live in cold climates, (ie a greyhound whose tummy is bare and living in Wi.), a coat/sweater is needed, and to not allow it is cruel.
Now a husky or lab with a protective coat is another story.

Tattoos are healthier for dogs. Microchips have been linked to malignant sarcoma. Tattoos are used in Europe and Canada b/c of this risk and they do have a national (or international, in the case of Europe) database. Microchips can, also, travel or "get lost" in the body. This, obviously, will not happen to a serial # tattooed inside of the dogs ear (and they do provide local anesthesia). And, Jen, I totally agree with you. After years of working with dog rescue, I really wish these people would put their money towards a better cause...

I would not paint my dog's nails. However, I have a large breed dog whose claws are wreaking havoc on the hardwood floors in my house. There is a product available called softclaws that covers the dogs claws to mitigate scratching, of floors, legs, etc... These are available clear and black as in many colors, which when applied look like painted nails. If it saves me money down the road in floor replacement, I will try it. So it might appear that my dog has painted nails, when she does not. Love your blog!

I totally agree. My little dog is a rescue, and she had to wear a sweater when we first got her because she had practically NO hair and it was the middle of winter- She HATED it. She kept trying to eat it. She looked like an exorcist dog trying to crane her head around to bite at the stupid pink collar on the thing. ;o) As for the nail painting, how these people can even get their dogs still enough to paint ONE nail, much less whole paws, is beyond me. Maizie (said sweater eating mini poodle)would just eat it anyways. No point at all.

Everything is an it. You are an it. I am an it. Saying IT does not mean that you are disrespecting anything or anyone if you are using it as a descriptor and not an insult.

But the other person did say that the dog goes outside, does it's business, then COMES BACK IN ASAP. Which, in my mind, means that they do care about their pet, they just don't want to bother with a stupid sweater for a dog.

Two of our dogs wear sweaters because we don't like having to take care of their long, easily matted coats, so we get them shaved. But one is a toy dog and the other is very old, so they both need the warmth during winter. One wears the arm cut off of a sweatshirt, and the other wears the leg of a sweat pant. Nothing fancy. They are dogs.

Um hello my dog has no fur on its belly because it is a shorthair dachshund and the belly fur rubs off. So yeah she seems to like the protective coat I put on her before I send her out to do her business in the snow. Protects her from frostbite.

It's interesting that you mention that the next thing is a pet having a tattoo of their owners on them. I vaguely remember the TV series "Taboo" where they showed that there were animals that had tattoos on them. Real, never-washing-off tattoos. While I couldn't find it online, I did find a site that sells temporary tattoo kits for animals: http://pet-ink.com/

And my question is why? There is no need for it!

Unknown said...

I heard of people painting their dog's nails just plain colors and I thought THAT was stupid!! People are seriously some fucking dumbasses!! I also think it's stupid to dress up their dog. In my opinion this borders on animal cruelty. It is not just stupid and pointless, it is mean. As for the special nail polish.... my daughter thought it would be funny to put nail polish on the dogs claws (ya, they are claws, not nails. it is a fucking animal for pete's sake!) and the dog immediately began to sneeze her snout off. So I am guessing dog's are allergic to regular nail polish.

I agree that it is a silly thing to spend money on, but don't we all spend money on silly things every now and then? Now I have a Packers jersey for my corgi but she just wears it for a photo every now and then and she would NEVER sit still long enough for a polish. She barely can keep it together for a nail trim! But doggie clothes did save a dog's life once. I was driving and I saw this dog on the side of the road wandering. There are a lot of farm dogs around so I typically would leave the dog alone considering it could be on it's own property.. except.. It was wearing a pink tshirt. I thought to myself, this is a farming community what the heck is a farm dog doing in clothes? It must be somebody's pampered pet. So I pulled over, picked her up and put her in my car. I could not find identification other than a rabies tag so I called the county and they called the owner. The owner came and picked her up. She had left the gate open and the dog had been gone for 3 days..

Hey, if you have a lame pet, no amount of schnazzing it up will distract people away from that. EXCEPT if you dye the headhair of a Chinese Crested (the ugliest dog on earth) purple or pink, then that puppy looks kindof cool (and sortof like Andy Warhol).
Check out this link, it's of a cat shaved to look like a dinosaur - makes the cat look like he's put together in slices. Pretty cool, I'd probably do it once for fun no matter what the price.
